How much is the gift card for and how much is dinner?  Does my gift card cover my dinner?

the gift card is for $25, and dinner is $50 for the two of you.  So the options are

you pay tip, and your friend pays $25
    OR
you both pay $12.50 + tip

Why aren't separate checks an option?

I pay my tip and friend pays $25.

Or if friend is the one that gave me the $25 gc, I would offer to split the difference.

Or if my $25 gc was a groupon card (for which I had only paid $10 or $15) I might also offer to split the difference as long as friend was sufficiently entertaining during dinner.

This.   Always get seperate checks.   Problem solved.

    Agreed on separate checks.

If I was the person without the gc, I would never expect my friend to use the gc for any of my meal.

[QUOTE]ew @ number one. and i only say EW, because really. you are out to eat and you use a gift card for partial payment. then what, you have $7.59 leftover on the giftcard? that feels kind of tacky to me. i feel like bmom is going to counter my point by telling me that she could use that $7.59 for lunch the next day or something.

Ha! I could, but no. I'm pretty generous with other people, so I'd use the GC on the whole bill and split the rest with my friend. <div>
</div><div>In fact, I have  restaurant.com GCs to use and I want to get a few people together so we can meet the minimum more easily at lunch/brunch time. </div>

If it was somewhere I went enough, I wouldn't use the card at all.  I'd keep it for another time.
