FWIW Ilove...

I do admire your rescuing/fostering work, so there's a gold star for you out there somewhere in interwebs land.

ilove - did you see our most current foster was adopted. That is 7! I don't know when we'll get another, or who it will be. I'm sure we'll find out soon.

What happened with Bug?  Was it you that posted about him?  My sister would so drive to get him if I showed her the pictures.

I did! I thought I commented on his picture (but maybe I just liked it after you posted he was adopted).

You guys have a helluva record! I'm looking to change ours (our last 2 were euthanized b/c they didn't pass their temp test). We're actually going to do some dog intros with Spike and the puppies in the next few days, to get them ready for their temp tests. We don't know if their only other interactions with dogs have been negative (but we assume), so we want to show them it's ok to meet good dogs, who aren't going to hurt them. They're puppies, so I'm hoping they will be extra "live in the moment" with meeting our dogs, and get some positive experiences out of it.

    Brian?! :(

Gah, Bug. (he wasn't my foster, one of the rescue board member's foster)

She and her H decided not to keep him (they'd been thinking about adopting him), b/c he was getting kind of pushy w/ her dogs, and she just wasn't feeling it as adoping him (they had to put down their 7 year old dog a few months ago, and have been non-commital with getting another dog).

So he went to the humane society, where he tried to attack 4 other dogs. He was euthanized. It's very sad, but it's an unfortunate effect of bad (backyard breeding), and non-socialization, etc etc etc. Because society is unforgiving of bully breeds, they have to be 1000% temperamentally sound, or they are not eligible for placement. (and Bug was only a Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix, NOT a pit bull)

H and I have a great record for getting dogs adopted. We had Taz the longest (at 4 mos) and Bennie the least amount of time (at two weeks). Fonzie was easy to adopt because he was a total cuddle bug and housetrained.

Pugs are also easier than pitties. It is very rare that one is aggressive. Usually is is the anxiety you have to overcome and the climbing. That is easy enough to deal with - throw 'em in a crate.

CW- yeah. I thought I'd posted about that. I guess not.

Yep, Brian didn't pass his temp test, and had to be euthanized. We were devastated. I still can't look at pictures of him, and we had him for what, a month?

I could go on and on about this, but this is why spay/neuter is so important and why the bully rescues do what they do. Bully breeds (pit bulls specifically) are not allowed to make mistakes, or have even an ouce of dog/dog issues. This means a lot of them are weeded out. We're trying so hard to change the perception of the breed, which means only placing dogs who are superior ambassadors for the breed.

It's really hard, and you almost have to become a little bit de-sensitized to it. I'm going to lose it though if these pups don't pass. H already wants to keep them if they don't (which we under no circumstances can do).

    :(  Poor bug.

People really suck sometimes and it's so sad when animals have to pay for their stupidity.

You will enjoy this story, Ilove.

I had to run a few errands before I went home yesterday. I saw a very petite woman walking a pit, who looked ridiculously happy, and was more walking the human than the other way around. Then an old couple walked up to her  and the dog from the other direction.  The pit rolled over on her back and exposed her belly and the old couple was loving on her, and she was licking them and wagging her tail and squirming. It was all so sweet. I was sitting in my car talking to my Mom and watching all this happen.

I love stories like that. It's always very interesting to see people's reaction when they see a pit bull (being walked, or in a setting like Petsmart or something). <------ I mean a pit bull with a responsible owner too, not a torn up dog with fight wounds and a thug walking it on a chain.

We took Spike as an Abassadog to an adoption event this weekend, and then had lunch on the patio of McAllisters afterward. I went in to get food and my rescue group friend hung out w/ him on the patio. I asked her if he was behaving when I got back and she said that a mom and her 2 kids saw him, and were SO excited to come pet him. Said he was loving all over the kids, and they loved him. I thought that was pretty cool, especially b/c he's never really had interaction with kids. But he's "never met a stranger," so I figured kids would be the same way.

Yea, dogs can be funny around kids. Mom's dog is a sweetheart but is freaked out by tiny people (aka children)

and nipped at my niece once. She, for the record, is a terrier.

So true - I would get a pit in a minute, but my brother-in-law is convinced that all bully breeds are just ticking time bombs ready to attack young children, so if I had one my niece and nephew would probably never be allowed to come over to my house.  I know he's wrong, but it's not a fight I'm up for.  God bless you for the work you do.  There's a great bully rescue in my old neighborhood and I try and support them as much as I can.

gah,  ilove that makes my heart hurt. I didn't know about Brian, and I'm so so sorry. I couldn't do what you do, I get attached to them through your pictures, I can't even imagine what it must be like in person.
