Distance between reception & ceremony sites--what's too far?

My fiance and I found a ceremony site and reception site that we love.  Our concern though is that they are 30 miles apart (40 minute drive--all expressway).  We live outside of Detroit so everyone has his/her own car and all of our out of town guests have roots here (i.e. family they could carpool with or borrow a car from).  Is this too much to ask of our guests?  Thanks in advance!

  • Just be prepared for less to show up at your ceremony or vice versa, that's what I think.
  • The major problem I foresee is people getting lost.

  • you need to consider where OOT people will stay and all of the "in-town" people live.

people staying near the reception venue will have to drive a 60 mile round trip just to attend the ceremony. and vice versa.

if there's going to be an bar at the reception, you also need to give some thought to the fact that people will be drinking and would need to drive 30 miles or more home.

You didn't mention what time of year you'll be having your wedding, but with living in Michigan, unless it's a summer or early fall wedding, you need to factor in weather complications as well.

Thanks for the feedback.  All but maybe one mile of the drive is on the freeway.  It will be in summer.  We only have 1-2 guests that dont have family who live in the area.   Most of the in-town people are closer to the reception site.

The reception site is not a hotel, however, they have a contract with a local hotel for a free shuttle to/from the reception so our guests who are drinking dont have to worry.
