don't remember if I'd mentioned it.
REgardless, we had a dude who studied under Feynman at Caltech, who recently retired from NASA, who is a computer whiz, come in and do a luncheon and presentation on astronomy stuff.
He was great--material was dry but he was a good speaker AND he made it accessable to laypeople, and he was just plain NICE.
So, during the 'rub elbows' mingle before the luncheon, boss introduced one of our part-timers to the speaker. Part-timer is an astronomy buff and said he had a burning question...and then asked about astronauts having sex in space.
Boss fled, grabbed the nearest competent student, and foised an introduction that forced the conversation to stop (the speaker did NOT want to have that conversation).
Then, during the Q&A @ the end (we vetted the questions, the were written down and I reviewed them so they wouldn't be 'can you ahve sex in space' questions), someone asked about outside interests...speaker said a few things and one of them included teaching/running sunday school, then on to 'normal' things like birdwatching and reading bad sci-fi.
So one of our full-timers (w/ tenure) stood up and had a question and went on a 'how can you possibly pretend to rationlize your knowledge of millions of light-years old universe w/ such drivel" rant, to which boss snatched the mic and said oh, lookit the time, the presenter has to get to the other bldg.
The first guy is socially inept.
the 2nd guy is both socially inept and an ass and I hate him.
They both appalled me--you can think the speaker's a twit (he wasn't but they can think it) but you are still polite to OUR GUESTS.
