I remember when her first album came out because my teacher Mrs. Young played it ALL THE TIME. She liked to play music for us, and would play her fav albums. Yes, on a record player.:)

She played Whitney on the regular, and I remembered seeing this pretty black lady on the cover with her hair pulled back.




Also, in Nola, talent shows were huge, and every girl in 87/88 would sing Greatest Love of All. That was THE talent show song. That, and Silly by Denise Williams.

All I get from this is that R&B has taken a nosedive if Chris Brown wins the grammy.  Especially given that shortly before his win, he "performed" and I heard no live singing.

I think that Chris Brown is crazycakes, but that boy is talented.

Did you see all of the "Chris Brown can beat me any time he wants" tweets?  WTF, people. Domestic violence is not a joke.

And really. I don't care how talented you are. Girlfriend-beating trumps it. Just like how JoePa was an awesome coach, but who cares since he enabled a child molester.

my whitney houston story is from grade school.  i had a separate class, and as an end of the year treat, our teacher took us to lunch at a local restaurant.  it was FANCY -- i remember picking out a very special purple dress and i wore my pink sweater with the pearl peter pan collar with it (those are coming back, btw).

anyway, i had a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mayo, some fries and a coke.  and in the dining room of this very, very fancy restaurant, they played music videos on like a 12" screen. 

"i want to dance with somebody" came on, and we were all arguing about who it was.  i said it was whitney houston, and no one believed me because her hair was too long.  (this was in the days before i knew what extensions were, and i just thought her hair grew crazy fast).  but the video had cuts of whitney with long hair (in the purple dress) and short hair (tied with a scarf, wearing jeans and a jacket).

as soon as people saw the short haired whitney, they acknowledged I WAS RIGHT and we went back to our sandwiches, swinging our legs under the table, and talking about how reagan was the greatest president ever or something like that.
