Question for the moms

Unfortunately, Baby A has the same sensitivity I do when it comes to mosquito bites. He swells like crazy. He has 2 bites on the same foot and it's so swollen it looks like he has a sprained ankle.

I have a call into the doc regarding giving him benedryl. She had mentioned it was ok during the last visit, but never specified type or amount.

Have you ever had to use benedryl for your little ones?

Re: Question for the moms

  • we tried it on the plane when she was ~14mo, to get her a little sleepy. it didn't work.

per our pedi, we used childrens' benadryl, and dosed based on weight. she was about 19.5lbs, so it was 3/4 tsp. if she was over 20 it would have been 1 tsp.

The pharmacy should be able to help with dosage.

I have had no reason to try it.

  • How old is A?
DD had an unexplained rash last year (at 2 1/2 years old, and 30 lbs), and the doctor told us to give her Children's Zyrtec or Children's Claritin, but for some reason not benedryl.  I wish I could remember the reason.  We chose Zyrtec, just because of my own personal brand preference (it works for my allergies but Claritin doesn't).
Anyway, we gave her whatever the recommended dosage on the bottle was for her age/weight, and after a few days the rash cleared up and did not return.

But if your doctor has previously said it's OK, I would go with the Benedryl (make sure it's Children's Benedryl) and go with a little less than the minimum dosage at first.
  • He is 1 year and 4 months today.

I was actually looking at it the other day and it says under 2 do not give, and under 4 ask a doctor.

    We'll see.

medicine bottles say a lot of things so the pharma companies can't be sued. If you trust your pedi, i would go with their advice.

i've already had multiple doctors tell me to take OTC meds differently than the printed instructions on the packaging.

i think in a lot of cases with the toddlers, it's a question of making sure to dose correctly based on weight rather than age - i mean really what changes on your second birthday from 23.5 months?
  • That's my thought, Barbie. A is a lot bigger than most other kids his age -- and also some 2 year olds. He's almost 30 lbs.

I'm going to see what the doc says and go with it. I can't imagine it's comfortable for him.

We got approval for benadryl at 6m, I think. We've given it several times, including once last week for mosquito bites.

This is one good reason to have big kids, yes?  I enjoy not worrying too much about overdosing them. (obviously, you still can, but mine are bigger than some kindergarteners now, so I feel safe giving them standard dosages, or by-weight dosages even if the age listed is high.)
