Wedding Woes

Overheard at the playground

Two 6th grade boys were swinging and chattering away.

Boy1: I'm going to be an app designer when I grow up
Boy2: I'm going to work at McDonald's

They started in on talking about how rats and mice aren't the same thing.  One of them says "I bet they would have a lot of overlap on a Venn diagram."

As I was telling DH the story he said "I bet McDonald's boy wasn't talking about diagrams"

This happened Saturday and the whole exchange is still cracking me up.

  • That is awesome and hilarious.   And I don't judge the McDonald's boy.  I'm sure that sounds like a really cool job to a 6th grade boy.

OK, I think this is awesome.

My kids aren't quite aiming for McD's, but there's another kid at school who is TOTALLY the venn diagram/app designer kid. He is freaking hilarious.

When I was in first grade, I wanted to drive an ice cream truck when I grew up--same philosophy, seemed like the coolest possible job.

True. I had a friend who wanted to be the checkout person at the grocery store. I mean, really - what jobs do kids really get to see/know about much? It's not like people dream up things like "database administrator" and "union labor negotiator."

DH and I had this exact conversation last month.  They had "Occupations Week" at Wooz's school (basically Career Day x 5) and as much as we wanted to participate, neither of us has a job that little kids can relate to at all.  We said if either one of us had a job scooping ice cream at Coldstone, we'd be the runaway hit of Occupations Week.  Alas.
  • I was also obsessed with the grocery store checker.  I loved the conveyer belt.  The scanning!  The cash register!  OH MY!

Thankfully I got it out of my system at age 16 and moved on.

I just a friendly gal looking for options.

</div><div>See, H has that down. His *actual* job, of course, is WAY over the head of anyone in elementary or even high school (too much minutiae - he spends all day thinking about a single protein, yada yada yada). BUT he can legitimately wear the white lab coat, tell them he's a Scientist, and then do the cool stuff like m&m chromatography or making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. </div><div>
</div><div>Bonus: His side-gig is freaking firefighter. Double win! </div><div>
</div><div>Me? I can wax philosophic all day about the merits of dropdown lists vs. radio buttons, and whether it's appropriate in a certain situation to put a form label above or to the left of a field. Yeah, not something kids really care about. :)
