Wedding Woes

4 Movie reviews - we had a Netflix weekend

Compliance

DH remembers hearing about this in the news.  Prank phone caller gets fast food manager and several other people to strip search a teenage worker by posing as a police officer over the phone.  We were in awe that so many people were stupid enough to the things they did and without questioning any of it.  It's sickening to think it really happened (several dozen times).  DH wishes it was appropriate enough to make Son watch it to help him understand why you don't just do things because you are told - that you have to think about your actions and what is going on.

Long Distance

This one was meh.  A grad student misdials and interrupts a murder.  Murderer *69s her and begins calling her from every murder he does and they realize he knows where she lives from the information attached to her phone number.  There's a whodunit twist at the end but it wasn't really that great, IMO.

Columbus Circle

I liked this one.  It had a pretty ok cast - Selma Blair, Amy Smart, Jason Lee, Beau Bridges, Kevin Pollak, Giovani Ribisi.   There's a lot going on in this movie with true/fake identities, so I don't really want to say too much. Recommend.

388 Arletta Avenue

This is another whodunit movie and I liked it but the ending was unsatisfying for me.  It's filmed completely from the perspective of hidden cameras throughout a couple's home, vehicle and workplace. I was mad at the main character for not involving the police and family more, but overall, I liked the movie.

I had a netflix weekend, too.  Argo was good and has probably gotten enough press that I won't go into detail reviewing it.  Also on the list:

    Frankenweenie

I liked it all right - very Tim Burton, not really for young kids.  There was one animal death in the end that bugged me.

    Seven Psycopaths

I really liked this one.  Well written, good cast. If you like Sam Rockwell and/or enjoyed In Bruges, it's worth checking out.

    The Master

Great performances by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, but I found myself getting kind of bored by the story.

    Celeste and Jesse Forever

Another one I really liked.  Rashida Jones and Andy Samburg are a divorcing couple trying to maintain their friendship while they both pursue other people (paraphrase of IMDB description).  Rashida Jones co-wrote the script, and I really like that she's willing to let her character look a little stupid and not perfectly beautiful all the time.
  • I remember hearing about that case in the news too. There was a whole lot of WTF?

I loved Seven Psychopaths. The dialogue was fantastic.
