Hee (Westboro Church)

McALESTER - Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counterprotesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of "USA, USA."

A few motorcyclists interspersed among the crowd also revved up their engines to muffle the protests.

More than two dozen law-enforcement officers - state troopers, sheriff's deputies and city police - formed a security cordon around the Westboro protesters.

"We're here to protect everyone," Miller said.

Westboro members picket military funerals across the country, spreading their message that "God hates America" because it tolerates homosexuality.

I believe there is a special place in Hell for these folks. They are truly wackjobs.

And some of their behavior is just a huge publicity stunt as well.

They're scumbags. Dirty, inbred freaks who wouldn't know God if he rolled his eyes right at them. Everything they do is a publicity stunt. God only knows why. I've never met anybody - even super hardcore southern baptist republicans - who agree with their ways.

I have to believe that they're literally all mentally ill. All of them.

Not trying to make light of such a disturbing issue, and those people really are disturbed:

Did anyone see the SNL skit recently where "the Devil" commented on members of WBC? It was hilarious! He said when they all got to Hell he was going to be dressed up as God and tell him all "Oh THANK YOU for protesting at funerals of dead soldiers. You sooooooooo GET ME!" and then he said he would 'be all like' "JUST KIDDING! You've been DAMNED!"

I have to give SNL props for that episode. I hope WBC members saw it and were embarassed. No, they'll probably just make picket signs and protest at the next airing of SNL.

"I don't know guys, that's a really nice thing to have in your house. I have one similar saying written on the walls all over my quiet, neat, non-childproofed home. I have it in my brand new car as a decal on the window. I even wear it on a t-shirt for when I go out to dinner or hang out at a trendy bar or go on a relaxing vacation. "All because I use birth control." It still brings a tear to my eye..." SnarkyMcSnarkerson

Yeah, whether you agree with the war or not, the whole protesting at soldiers' funerals really irks me beyond belief.

Have you guys seen what that woman looks like? Hideous. One of the radio stations here actually got them to agree to a radio interview instead of protesting a soldier's funeral. She is such an irate & angy b!tch. She never answered any of the questions she was asked, but simply changed the subject or went off a different tangent.

This group is so mentally deranged it isn't funny. Someone needs to put them out of their misery and make them wake up, but I don't think that is happening. Like I said, when their time comes, I believe they will be sadly mistaken when they are thrown into the fires of Hell.

Hell is probably too good for these assholes. Gotta love the protesters, though! When they were here in my town last year, they picketed several locations, including a school. There were three of them and hundreds of the rest of us. At the school, they had told kids that if they counter-protested they'd be suspended, but loads of kids did anyway. THAT made me really proud!

I can understand one wackadoodle  committed to this "cause" but I can't wrap my head around a whole group of them.

I remember the question coming up once before, but do we know yet where their money comes from?

They are never able to explain exactly why God is ok with what they're doing. The crazy takes over, and they stop making any sense.

They make their money by suing people - or at least part of it.

One of their tactics is to taunt people with their hate-spewing to the point where someone gets phsyical. When they do, they sue them for outrageous amounts of money for assault.

Apparently some Chick Fil A owners and some Hobby Lobby owners are known supporters of them. But that's second(third?) hand information so I'm not sure how true it is.

I might believe at least some of it though, since there's a Chick Fil A near CLT that lets people picket abortions and use a bullhorn to tell people to repent their sins and accept Jesus as their personal lord and savior and admit they're sinners.

There's nothing Christian about what these wackadoos are doing.

Reading about these counterprotestors made me weepy.
