"Research your field" "Know what you're writing"

Vent. Feel free to ignore me.

Yeah, great, thanks. Would the publishing establishment throw me a bone, here, and post genre definitions somewhere on the entirety of the interwebz? Because I have no idea what some of these things are - "hi-lo" fiction? And what's the practical difference between fantasy, horror, and paranormal? If my vampires do most of their killing off-screen, as it were, where does that put me?

Grr. I frustrate easily, can you tell?

  • This was from a publisher?

You should spend some time as a vampire. That will help you get into a vampire's head more.

    Sorry they suck:(

  • Uh... the publisher. Not the vampires. they're supposed to suck.

  • I think it's less important that you pick a genre that your book absolutely fits into and more important that you pick one that works and stick with it.

Publishers just want to know what shelf to put it on in the bookstore. If you tell them it's fantasy-horror-paranormal they're going to toss it and pick up the next thing in the slush pile.

I'd go with paranormal romance if I were you.
  • Oh, and I still owe you comments. I read much slower when I'm editing. I'll try to get it to you by the end of the weekend.
  • BC, I'm going through lists of publishers and agents to figure out where to query, so it's something I've been seeing over and over again.

Duckis - thanks. I was thinking it was more urban fantasy, because I don't think I follow romance conventions as strictly as I should. Oh, and I changed the ending, so you'll have mail in a minute.

  • Hm. Urban Fantasy works too. Yeah, I think I like that better.

You changed the ending? I need a new email too, then.

  • Not, like, hugely, but yeah, I tweaked for an extra few pages. Check mail in about 5 minutes.

  • Bmom if you're interested in an editor I know one. I have no idea what she charges, but she's a professional editor with a masters in English and years of editing under her belt.

  • Thanks, BC, I'll remember that.
