Wedding Woes

seriously, WWYD.

c+p

I went to DD's school for a parent info thing - it was me and some other moms.  About 10 min. into the meeting, one parent gets up and says, "I'll be right back.  I need to check on my kid."  She had left her 2 year old asleep in her car.  In a public parking lot.  Which we could not see from our meeting room.  And it was 2 closed doors to get out of the building to the parking lot, so I doubt we could hear the kid if she cried.  So, she comes back, and we're all just looking at her, so maybe she felt compelled to explain, so she says, "Oh, she's fine, still asleep, the windows are open, so it's ok."  So, then I couldn't focus on the meeting anymore, because I kept thinking about the little girl asleep in the car.  The mom got up to check on her a couple more times, and the last time, I guess she woke up because the mom brought her back to the meeting where she sat quietly on her mom's lap for the last 10 min.  Maybe I am super paranoid mom, but I can't imagine leaving DD asleep in the car in a public parking lot - especially if I was somewhere where I couldn't see/hear her.  I was trying to think, OK, maybe there's something I don't know about her kid - she didn't sleep well last night, is sick, etc.......but then I'm also thinking, it doesn't matter - I still don't think I could do that with DD.

(i'm shocked that no one had the guts to say anything about it. you can get into some serious trouble here if you leave a kid or dog in a car alone. i guess even the fear of a ticket or arrest isn't enough, since the safety of the kid isn't the biggest concern.)

  • Do people not know how speak up?

"Girl, go get your kid out of the car."

Wow. I hope I would say something, but what on earth do you say? "Aren't you afraid someone will kidnap her?" or just "That's really not safe." Obviously, she doesn't give a sht.

i would have said something, llke, "you just left her in the car? you don't worry about someone breaking in?"

i know i'd say something. i'd be the least popular person by far. it's making me angry that no one said anything and the kid could have probably woken up scared to be alone.

It just seems that some parents sometimes lose their damn minds after #2 (or 3, etc) comes along.  That's the only explanation I can think of.  I just can't even...

    People be crazy, yo.
  • WTF? I would have told her to get her kid out of the car, or go sit in the car with her.

Better for the ladies in the group to tell her something than the police.

  • y'all know i am not a quiet person.

my sister told me that one of her friends left both kids in the car to run into the store for something and had an eye on them the whole time.  she even saw the cop pull up and wait for her as she came out of the store.  she got a long lecture, ticket and court date.  she was banned from chaperoning the kids' school events, had a probation officer, the whole nine yards.

this was the OP's response to me saying that i judged anyone in the group who didn't say anything:

After the second time she came back, someone said something like, "Oh, why don't you just bring her in here?"  And the mom said she didn't want to wake her up. So, no one said anything else after that.

Our preschool has a written policy that the police will be called if you leave a kid in the car for dropoff/pickup.  I'd give a reminder warning then call while I stood by the car.  How would those parents have felt if something had happened.
  • thats a sure fire way to get arrested in Atlanta......every summer theres always a tragedy where someones child overheated and died in the car....and....last night 2 children were carjacked in their Moms car....thats just plain stupid!!!
  • I wouldn't have the nerve to say something (I hate confrontation!), but I probably would have excused myself to "use the ladies' room" and called the cops!
