re: recycling, since it's dead

We now have curbside recycling!  It's seven dollars and fifty freaking cents per month, but YAY for not having a bunch of crap piled up in the garage!

I switched trash companies last week, and I am disproportionately excited about it.  Actual trash pickup is about $7 less per month, but I added the recycling, so now we're paying approximately the same for more service.  And hopefully these guys will actually come and take the trash when they are supposed to.

Ironically, we just had a "recycle more" campaign.  The trash rates were going to go up if people didn't start putting more into the recycle containers.  The only recycler I can complain about right now is DH.  Our pickup people are always on time, leave the cans neat, and if we're out they talk to the kid.

Our recycling is provided by the city, and included in our utilities bill/water/sewer.  We need a larger receptacle because I save my paper at work and take it home.

    I have recycling things:

    1) The guys who pick up our recycling always dump our bins in the middle of the drive way. They only do this to us; not to any of the neighbors. The city contrascts this service through a third party, so I don't know who I need to complain to.

    2) Our landlord/neighbor doesn't recycle. This bothers me.

    3) I switched my PM moisturizer because the brand I was using didn't have recyclable packaging.

    4) I got sample of dermablend makeup remover and you use it like a face wash. I prefer this over the Neutrogena liquid makeup remover because you don't have to use (and throw away) cotton rounds every time you use it. I thought I was sold on the product, but I have to make sure the packaging is recyclable, before I make the switch.

    4. I forgot to say, my clarisonic removes almost ALL traces of makeup.  But that is not a very friendly statement to non-clarisonic owners.

I have to drive mine to the huge bin behind a school. This only works because I have to pass that school to get to my school.

My city doesn't pick up recycle, and it is the suck.

NOLA - When I was in Arlington, I'd bring my plastics to my school and I'd take my paper to the local elementary school. I was beyong thrilled when we moved here and there was curb side recycling. THRILLED. We generate less than one bag of trash a week.

Now we need to concentrate on the reducing part of things, as well as the reusing.

This bin is great because it's for glass, plastic, and cardboard. I don't have much newspaper. I used to buy a Sunday paper, but haven't done that in months.

The mill actually has a recycling program with the schools.  The schools fill up boxes with paper and get money.

I pay $15/month for a private recycling service because my "city" doesn't offer anything and if I want to drive my own stuff to collection points...glass is an hour away and cardboard & plastic drop-off is only available one weekend per month.  I would never remember.

see, I was just throwing sht away.  I wasn't terribly proud of that fact, but there is only so much effort I am willing to put into recycling, seeing as my carbon footprint is relatively small already.

Our recycling place is close, but it's pretty selective about what it takes, and it's open from like 9-2 on weekdays and then 10-1 on Saturday.  Before we had kids, the saturday thing wasn't a big deal, but now I'm usually otherwise occupied during that particular 3-hour window.

But H would never give in, so he just collected (ok, HOARDED) recyclables in the garage for six months until he found time to go to the recycling center.  At least now he has to get rid of that sht every week.
