I don't understand why this situation is going viral now...he's been an active warlord for a couple decades.  I haven't watched the video but I have read several books about him and the LRA - he's a monster, no doubt about it but I get the feeling the video was put out for the wrong reasons.

Elle, please explain that.  I mean, as a "typical" American I would say I had literally NO idea who Kony was...I knew there was genocide, child armies, but not the name "KONY".  So I suppose from my point of view, if you make someone MORE visible you are creating a movement for change.  Albeit a long time coming.

I mean, I get that it will be "cool" to use Kony as a buzzword, but I still think it's a good thing to get it out there.

Joseph Kony is a warlord in Uganda. He's one of those crazy "Jesus tells me to kill people from the opposing tribe" kind of folks.  He founded the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) by abducting children from rural villages and schools and they rape and pillage and murder all over Uganda.  The Ugandan government actually orinally hired Kony way back in the day to fight other rebel groups at the time but he went rogue and is now a monster. He hides out in the Central African Republic and the dense Ugandan jungle and gets financial support from the Sudanese government (although that could have changed since South Sudan has become its own country). The book Stolen Angels by Kathy Cook gives a really good account of what it's like to be abducted into the LRA.

I knew who he was, and some of the things he's been doing, but I haven't received any videos.

Me thinks, I probably don't want to see it.

I don't want to watch the video either...I've read enough about him. The Ugandan government has had many opportunities to get him, the International Criminal Court actually nearly had him.  The international community can't do sh*t if the Ugandan government isn't willing to actually charge him and detain him.

The video is neither horrific or propagandizing (as far as I can see), it is promoting the humanitarian effort of many countries around the world to spread the awareness of the atrocities of this person's "war crimes".

i guess i'm not fully comprehending the goal of this movement - to create awareness of what this guy and his army are doing/the crimes against children? to spur the US government to get (more) involved in trying to take down Kony?

it's funny because i doubt the people who are trying to stir up this movement are willing to go into combat themselves and try to take this guy down. let's risk the lives of US soldiers and spend millions of taxpayer dollars on this!

i could never be elected president. "stop bitching and DO SOMETHING about it" or "NO HANDOUTS" would not be effective campaign slogans. however, I wouldn't make women jump through ridiculous hoops to undergo medical procedures, or call someone a slut for using BC - so maybe i'm not all bad.

I definitely agree that Kony is a bastard and the whole world should know about it but there's absolutely nothing any other nation can do about him. Either Uganda or the Central African Republic have to arrest him and prosecute him. Many other nations have applied pressure to both these countries to lock him away but they haven't done anything, even when he was willing to discuss a peace treaty.

Also, another huge part of the issue (possibly bigger than arresting Kony) is how to basically repatriate these child soldiers back to their communities.  These kids typically face exile back home or are socially isolated to the point where they willingly go back to the LRA. Families disown these children and there are no resources availble to them for counseling. Rape victims are seen as tainted and unlovable and young women who have had the children as a result of rape (especially the women who have had children by Kony) are shunned.

The reason it is currently all over the place is that without enough public outcry, our government won't bother with the situation.  There are troops?  diplomats?  some people from here on official government business doing things there to track him and help arm and train the Ugandan people to take care of this now, but they're set to be pulled back this year unless we as a people let them know that we still want our folks there helping, hence the "let's all let everyone know that we give a damn about this RIGHT NOW" viral nature.
