Wedding Woes

cost of alterations?

How much do you pay for someone to take in a shirt, for example? Or hem a pair of pants?

I'm new to this whole "tailoring" thing, and I think I'm getting screwed.

I think they charge H $5/pair of jeans/pants/shorts for hemming.

What Nicole said. Some dry cleaners have their prices posted.

$10-15 per pair of pants or jeans. Not sure about tops.

Do you have any friends that sew? I only go to a tailor for fabrics I don't have the machine for (stretch, jersey) or for delicates. Taking in shirts and hemming pants are 15-minute jobs, tops, so they shouldn't, IMO, being charging more than $10.

H just had three jackets altered for $49, but everything is cheaper here.  I was recalling paying something like $200 for a bustle in my wedding dress in St. Louis.

Wow, zsa. My bustle was only $45.

I figured.  I mean, the shirts are being taken in via the already-existing darts in the front and back.  They wanted $18 for 2 seams and $27 if they had to take in all 4.  Um, seriously?  Suddenly my $13 shirt is a $40 shirt.

I know 2 people who sew. One is MIL, who doesn't pay much attention to detail. The other is our old neighbor, who probably would, but I always feel badly asking friends to do stuff like that. Especially since I'm pretty much needing all of my clothes to be altered in some way.  And the place I was taking them offers one-day turnaround, which is pretty nice.

I did see a sign for a woman who works out of her house. Or maybe I could stop by JoAnn or Hancock FAbrics and see if anyone left a business card or something.

Or go back to your $45 bustle person.

True. But that's AlterFashions in Ballwin(ish) - 141 and Manchester.  It's like an hour away from my house and not exactly close to my downtown office, either.
I also don't know if they do regular clothes or just formals/suits/etc.

I do my own (poorly) for free.  I'm sure no one is surprised by this.
