Wedding Woes

'Cause I'm Bored, Update

I have work to do, but I forgot my stupid ring to fix this dumb office chair that keeps sinking.  It makes typing medical summaries hard (I just look at the page, not the screen), so until after lunch, I'm doing busy work and this.

So, the AZ bill lit a fire under my a$$.  Especially since KS is debating similar bill and KS and MO are just a bit too close, sharing a city and all.

I just helped start a National Organization of Women (NOW) chapter in my little city.  We actually had a good turnout on Friday to get it started and are expecting more next month (this was the start of Spring Break).  I am treasurer.  Holy cow, this organization wants a LOT of work out of it's chapters.  Hopefully we're able to get off the ground and running.  First up is what I'm talking about next:

There is going to be a march on every state's capital on 4/28/12, the March Against the War on Women.  There's a national page on FB and each state has their own page to share information as well.  It looks to be well organized, with each state already having permits secured and parking/march paths planned.  Come out!

i am impressed. this is great, especially considering i remember a lot of past work issues of yours. congrats!
  • DH felt like a little bit of a rock star.  He came to the meeting with me.  It was this weird mix of retired (and extremely pissed off) older women (60s), college age (20s) and me.  But all the college aged girls were oohing and aahing over him.  Apparently, he's the only feminist male they've ever met.  Then they were all shocked we were *gasp* legally married.  I said I wouldn't have married a man who wasn't as feminist as I was and if Steinem can get married, we all can and still retain feminist viewpoints.  This concept was apparently new.

I don't think there's anything you could promise me to go back to my 20s, unless it was to keep my 35 year old brain with me.
  • I may have to look for my state FB page for this. Whoda thought we'd have to fight for this Sh!t all over again....next, suffrage!

  • Here is the page that lists all the links to each individual state.  This is also the National group page.  They just received the permit to have a national march on DC in September, after our individual ones in April:

  • thank you for helping in the fight to keep things out of my junk drawer!

  • Well crap.  I'm actually in the capital on that day, but at another event.  I still am going to show my support.

  • This is excellent!

But WTF at these girls thinking that you can't get married?  I thought only Rush Limbaugh thought that feminist = man hater.

Guys that age are, by and large, a bunch of misogynist buffoons.  I don't think any self-respecting feminist would give most of them the time of day.

  • I need to get my butt to a NOW meeting or something. AZ is getting out of hand. Here's some more shenanigans from our wonderful legislators: http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/PoliticalInsider/157762
  • I can only speak for myself.  I know when I got married, it was a big deal to me  b/c I did feel like I was subjugating myself to a man.  I finally realized that HE was TOO and that's what made it an okay deal for me.  DH believing in the same values I did (my career was as important as his to us, my belief system was important, I was an equal and valued partner in our relationship) helped with that.  DH stood firm when his family tried to make a big deal out of me not taking his last name.  Which paved the way for younger SIL to do the same.

There are lots of feminists who believe that marriage is a patriarchal institution that still value women as nothing but property and/or government institution that robs women of their individual rights (especially in the days where spousal rape wasn't illegal), etc.

  • Well wouldn't you know...the old ladies in my area have a chapter. I'm out of town for the April meeting but it looks like they've been busy protesting at our House rep's office here in town and he's a gigantic assh0le. Excellent.

That argument makes me want to stab the person making it.
  • Oh and way to go on all your stuff, V.  :)
