the overall theme -- but especially cutting up vintage and antique quilts  -- made me lose my breath for a second.

Oh, man, you know what was fun? The Depression. Great-grandma talks and talks about how it was the best time of her life. We TOTALLY need to recreate that for our wedding!

Someone in the comments was completely "anamored" with it.

I don't think it's as bad as the South African colonial wedding - but it ain't good.

it's like being poor but without the actual poverty.

What does she mean it's a bit like the war? It's a bit like the war without the drab fashion, the powered egg, the rationing, the bombing... In fact, without the war?! Yeah, it's a bit like the war without the war, isn't it, hm?!

[QUOTE]What really would have taken it to the next level was getting your food from a dumpster, and tough if there wasn't enough to go around.  Starvation is romantic, right? Guys, I'm thinking up a great vintage theme. I think I'm going to go with Polio Outbreak Hospital wedding. Everyone in wheelchairs!

I trying to decide how the thought process went from the 40's "football" reception to this. "How quaint! They didn't have a big party, why don't we be even more quaint and go all Depression for our wedding!"

And I also gasped when I read what she did to the quilts Hmo. The hell was she thinking.

there was some knottie back in the day who had some slavery thing in her wedding, because her (white) grandma was a slave.  people were all wtf about it, and she was super defensive because "you didn't have to be black to be a slave, you know!!!!"  mmkay.

Wonderwife once said something along the lines of 'people who don't show enough reverence for the occasion probably also don't have enough respect for the institution." This wedding seems like a shining example of that.

My grandmother, who was born in 1920, would have crapped her pants if I had suggested something like this. She thought buffets were tacky.

I have no problems with someone going for a particular styalistic theme like this.  I think this is all much prettier than the typical Davids Bridal Prom 2.0 theme that most people turn to on a budget.  I don't even have a problem with the hobo part.  But referencing the depression is pretty tacky.  I know poor people used to be prettier than they are now and all, but there is nothing romantic about being hungry and hopeless.

50 years from now will people be throwing Hurricane Katrina themed weddings where guests are allowed will feast on vintage Doritos atop the roof of a flooded building?  Oh, those were the days!!

THIS.  I thought some of the look of the wedding (not the clothes) was nice, and I don't think having a casual affair necessarily makes it frivolous or detracts from the institution of marriage, as long as the spirit of the gathering is focused on being with loved ones and celebrating the union.  But yeah, the depression is nothing to be especially nostalgic about.
