re: names

I was talking to a coworker the other day about her name - "Haley."  She said she hated it and it sounded like she was 7. 

If someone named "Haley" feels that badly about their name, imagine what poor Jimothy or Jascian or Na'kilrah (<-- actual name) is going to feel like!

Yeah, but I have a friend named Sarah who hates her name because everyone had it. 

I think the reason youneek names are so common now is that the generation of Jennifers Megans and Sarahs developed a complex that put too much emphasis on name as identity.

What I don't get is why people think the only way to be unique - or even just unusual - is with a cracked-out name. Bacon's real name is classic, pretty, appropriate for an adult, and has unlimited nickname potential for a kid. But it's not some crazy-ass thing we made up, it's just a name that isn't widely used. 

There are enough normal names in the world to go around.

I like to think we took the same approach.  We still get a ton of compliments on both names.

A coworker named his kid Atticus, from To Kill a Mockingbird.  A little brave for my taste, but at least it's a real name.
