I was super excited to see that Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs (the authors of the infamous Pendergast series) had a new book out for a new series, Gideon's Sword. I have pretty much loved their entire joint career and a few of their solo projects as well.
I'm horribly disappointed in it. It's missing the mystical/science fiction/myth vs reality/Indiana Jones flavor they have in nearly everything else. It's basically The Saint. Just substitute China for Russia. It's not very well written and the characters are one dimensional and boring.
Also, in a very weird writing decision, the first 50 pages are spent on a character story/introduction that 1) could've been a whole book and 2) left me thinking, ooookay, so what are we writing about for another 250ish pages? It was like a little novella that they could've used to start the series and THEN put this out as the first book.
