for years, i didn't think the jr league was real.  i only read about it in books, so i assumed it was some kind of well-known literary motif.

i also thought it was a white person thing, but last year i met a japanese jr leaguer.

Everything in this town is a 'white person thing.' I've never lived in such a homogonous place.

There is a jr. league office not to far from my house. I thought it might be a way to meet people and do some good. However, I'm afraid it'll be my nest experience all over again.

Exclusivity probably depends on the town.  But I think it is one of those things that you need to have a sponsor to join but a lot of people would be willing to sponsor you if you wanted to join.

Former Coirker was in JR League.  It was a LOT of work.  Like a LOT of volunteer hours, a lot of fundraising/hosting and A LOT of $$.  I would talk to a first-year JL person and get their take on it before you start jumping into puddles.

MinM, we leave in similar type places and I will say though our Jr. League is as homogenous as the rest of the community, they do awesome things in the community for various charities, seem to have a blast with each other, have a wide range of ages, and the ones I meet range from work-a-holic single woman to married to super rich doctor and need something to do.  It's worth a shot.  I've been considering it myself for awhile, just to get out and have some networking and fun.

Hm, our Jr. League isn't expensive.  I remember thinking the membership fee was fine and the dues were workable, i.e. volunteer at this event for this long to make up the $.  They had it pretty specifically spelled out on their local website.

There is an application fee, annual fees, and then you have to purchase tickets to their annual ball. Not all that much money for those fees. I imagine there might be other associated costs.

Heffa - I tried to make the nice nice with the locals when I moved here and we mixed as well as oil and water. I was unceremoniously dropped from the local GTG e-vite list after two GTGs.

Yeah, ours is half that.  Difference in COL, I'm sure.  $50 for app fee, $100 for membership dues, ,$50 donation to Ball or one ticket purchase, and 6 hours of volunteer at a specific shop or $100 of donated clothing to said shop (it's a resale shop they use to make $ for one of the charities don't know which one).

I am in Junior League and think it's great! I joined because I haven't lived here long and don't meet locals because of my job in travel. I am presently starting my second year. There are so many worthwhile projects, you can't help but to find something that interests you so you don't mind spending the time. They do plenty of social activities too so, it's not all just do gooder things. They tell you up front what the requirements are as far as time and money so you can decide if it's for you. I have met ladies in all situations, married, single, with kids, without, working, stay home, etc.
