That's going to be a really awful conversation.  I hope she comes on here afterward and posts about it.

Also, how does someone old enough to be married miss the mark by that much?  I'm assuming that this is a sizeable chunk of the total budget, and not just 1 or 2% of the total.

When I got married my mom and I both said we thought $X was a reasonable price for a party. After looking at about 2 venues we realized in DC the price of the party my mom wanted was going to be closer to $XXX. So you could say we blew our original budget by 3x. But, my mom's plan all along was that she'd pay what she thought each individual item was worth. After the initial number went out the window we didn't really work from a budget. It was more like, Do we want this? Are we willing to spend $Y for it? Ok, go.
