Wedding Woes

Advice Needed - Pastor Problems!

My sister is getting married in October. We have a home church that she wants to get married at. The pastor of this church has been there for like 6 or 7 years. He's a nice guy and all, but my sister and the rest of my family would really like for this other pastor to do the wedding. This other pastor is a close friend of mine and we know she would do a great job in the ceremony. The problem is, this pastor that we want to marry them USED TO BE the youth minister at my home church. She and the senior pastor there bumped heads quite a lot and had some problems which is why she quit working there. Would it be rude to ask the senior pastor of our church NOT to do the wedding? More importantly, would it be rude (or would it offend him) to ask a pastor that he has had problems with in the past to do the wedding? Thanks for your help.

Re: Advice Needed - Pastor Problems!

  • Hmmmm....I would think that a pastor (well, anyone for that matter) would be over butting heads with someone several years ago.  Were there major issues, or was it more just style-related?

Either way.....i dont' think the pastor of a church woudl EXPECT that he/she would be asked to do a ceremony for a particular couple. At least not any of them that I know.  And I know A LOT....my dad is a pastor.  :)  Sometimes, it's a matter of who the couple is closest with.  I always wanted to have someone I know well do my ceremony.

  • It is very common for former pastor to come back to do a wedding.  I would speak to the pastor you want to do the wedding first, make sure she is available and willing, And then ask her opinion on how to get permission from the senior pastor.  A lot of people wouldn't care at all or would even appreciate not having an extra service to do.  Others would really appreciate the professional courtesy of being asked by the other pastor for permission to "play on their court."
