Wedding Woes

travel bug

Wikitravel is dangerous. I've spent a bunch of time today reading about obscure destinations and checking into potential trips for next year. we were out of town last weekend, and i'm already itching to go somewhere else.

What the most interesting/fun place that you've visited, and what did you enjoy about it?

Re: travel bug

  • I should probably not look at that website.  I PPP TripAdvisor.  I sometimes end up reading travel forums for places that I have no intention of visiting.

I don't think I can pick a most interesting or fun place.  I love them all!

  • My favorite trips have been Aruba, Cabo, and SoCal.
  • I'm pretty much obsessed with Australia.  We are so itching to get back there but it won't be for quite a while.

We did a lot there.  We stayed 6 nights in Sydney and 4 nights in Cairns (Great Barrier Reef area).  There's so much to do - tourist spots (Sydney Harbor Bridge, Opera House, etc), tour the rainforests, Blue Mountains, snorkel at the GBR. <<we could have spent two days on snorkeling tours.

I have the best stories from India, of course. My richest travel experiences have always been the international ones.

But I seriously want my next real vacation to be to an all-inclusive beach resort somewhere. I want to nap and read books and have a pool boy bring me drinks all day. The end.

I think it'll be at least 2 years before anything like that happens again. Maybe we'll start planning a big trip for our 10th anniversary. <sigh>

  • We had a blast in Puerto Vallarta.

I really loved Mesa Verde though.  I really enjoy going places where I learn something.

DG - highly recommend http://www.dreamsresorts.com/drepv/index.html in puerto vallarta. we went there for our honeymoon, and I told DK i wanted to go back for our 10 year anniversary. if you do an anniversary  trip, they'll give you a complementary bottle of champagne. if you can't get the grandparents to watch the boys, you could drop them off with the kids' club all day. go for a balcony suite with a hot tub. worth it. beautiful, amazing food, all-inclusive, every room is ocean view, private beach about 4mi outside of town (so easy to take a cab in for shopping or day trips)

i have a hard time picking a favorite - but any of the international destinations would be high up there. Amsterdam was really neat - I wish we had more time there to explore. I also really enjoyed our cruise last year, especially snorkeling in Honduras and seeing the Mayan ruins in Belize.

I've been looking at all-inclusives in Central America and the Caribbean, and more cruises.

  • Looking back, my favorite trips are the ones where I've just wandered around and stumbled across hidden gems.   Mostly in the car, but sometimes by foot.
This last trip to NYC that I took (the one where I got to meet Busy and Thistletwat) was awesome because we didn't do too many touristy things and just walked around exploring.  I also had a lot of alone time to do my own exploring.
One time, old BFF and I took an impromptu road trip to Ohio's "north shore" (Lake Erie) and then went to Detroit and explored.  We had so much fun.   Road trips were awesome back when gas was only $0.99/gallon...    so sad.
Another time, when old BFF and I were in Las Vegas, we rented a car and drove out to Red Rock Canyon.   It was beautiful.  I'd love to go back some day.
And finally, my favorite days in Paris where when we just wandered through neighborhoods, went to farmers markets, and pretended to be Parisian.  (even though I'm sure we stuck out like sore thumbs.)
While I love beach vacations, relaxation and feeling "recharged" - - I also love the adventure of an urban setting, and feeling absolutely exhausted at the end of a trip.   If I had my way/money, I'd take a big city trip one week, followed by the beach for a week.
  • England was pretty awesome as was Vancouver Island and Washington DC at the peak of cherry blossoms. Although Iceland is on my bucket list.

  • AF, I love Red Rock Canyon, we tend to go whenever we are out visiting my IL's. The hiking is nice and the views are incredible.

I think my favorite trip was the week off we took after I graduated, we drove up through Big Sur, into Monterey, and then back home. But we didn't rush, the weather was both sunny and rainy which made for some excellent relaxation times, and we really just enjoyed the time away and exploring.
