I was there once, but only for about 36 hours, so hopefully others will be of more help. The castle was really amazing - a city unto itself.  I went there from London, so I'd already seen my first castle-that-wasn't-mostly-a-ruin, and it still really struck me. The city is cool, but I think summer (tho crowded) might be better than fall, because a lot of the Georgian part of the city is made of granite, and when it's gray and wet, everything just looks like wet cement

There are some interesting, easy day trips too - Roslyn Chapel (from the DaVinci Code) is not far away and really unusual.  I went to Edinburgh by train, so I got to see some of the countryside and thought Scotland was beautiful.

I'm pretty lame about going out, so hopefully someone else will know about night life.

Yes.  I barely remember anything about it except for the queen was there to rededicate the castle and I have an AWESOME picture of her in the car.  I mean perfect zoom in and everything.

I bought some nice crystal, took pictures of the pink sheep (they spray paint their sheep to identify them) and enjoyed walking around the town.  Thats really about all I remember.
