Damnit, middle school

Son is in 5th grade - last year of elementary.  The hours are normal school hours 8something to 2:50.

I found out yesterday that the middle schools have a different schedule - 8:55 to 3:40.

WTF?  This is going to totally piss up my routine.  Yes, I'm annoyed at something that is 6 months away.

Re: Damnit, middle school

  • I don't understand why middle school would start later.

Our Intermediate, JR High, and HS all start earlier than elementary, by an hour or so.
  • in PA, we were the same as conn - elem started later in the morning than middle or HS. (the district busses would pick up the HS then middle school then elem school kids) - it make sense to have them staggered, but that seems like a big difference.

  • I just checked one of the high schools' website.  They go 7:45-2:35.
  • i can imagine the frustration. at least you found out with 6 months notice, though. hopefully it works itself out.
  • I'd be annoyed, too.

I think a lot of districts have staggared the start times because of budget cuts leading to bus schedule nightmares.

    This is why it's stupid.
EVERYTHING about rhtyms and cycles and development shows that teen/older teen brains wake up later, etc.

THEY should have the late shift.  really.

Man, I remember going 8:05 to 3:15 or something.  That sucks Taw.  I guess you have time to adjust and be mad?  Not a good answer, I know.

  • That seems dumb.  Will son still be in middle school when L starts elementary?

I just a friendly gal looking for options.

  • The district I work in has their high schools start at 9. Their schools are on staggered starts, as are most around here.  The elementaries start at 8, middle schools 8:30 and high school 9 AM.  They stagger them to have different bus routes for the 3 age groups so as not to have kindergartners on buses with 18 year olds since not all 18 year-olds remember to behave appropriatly around little kids. Also to have enough buses to transport the entire district at the same time is not financially a possibility. The buses do triple duty each day.

The district I live in, has changed their start times too. When my kids were in high school classes started at 7:15 - unless you signed up for a ZERO period class which STARTED at 6:30..... AM........  but you also could get your classes done, get out of school and go to work or take college classes (a LOT of our kids take college classes in the afternoon).

My daughter did this her senior year so that after her classs were done at 11 she had time to get all her homework done and then had time for all of her activties. She was Sr class president, 1st string violin in the orchestra, a tutor, participated in 3 sports, and worked and  National Honor Society, a mentor,  and ranked 15 out of 600 taking honors and AP classes.  A state officer in another organization outside of school and stuff I've forgotten she even did. Yes, I'm bragging. She was a very busy, involved kid.

But PP is right, studies show high school kids mostly do better if they don't start as early and that is why the district where I work reverse their start order so high school starts last and later than the elementaries used to start.

Oh jeez, you're going to make me do math.

If I figured it correctly, he'll still be in middle school when she starts kindergarten.  He'd start 8th grade in 2014, same year she'd turn 5 and start K.

Not really. Bacon starts at 7:30, and she doesn't get lunch till after 11. <div>
</div><div>They go technically 7:50 to 3:15. The school opens at 7:30, and those twenty minutes are their writing period. Bacon hates to be late.</div><div>
</div><div>I would *kill* for a 9 am start. Oh, the luxurious sleep I could have!</div>
