A decent chunk of my savings account is supposed to pay for a new fence. Insurance already wrote us a check for what they were willing to pay towards it. Two months ago we called a guy who built a fence for one of our neighbors. We really like their fence and the guy who built it is a carpenter rather than just a fence guy (also happens to be neighbor's cousin, so maybe they wouldn't dare say anything bad) and we weren't wanting the standard dog ear Lowe's panels.
We had a little trouble meeting up with him (I think there were three cancelled meetings and many unreturned phone calls), but he finally came over and we really liked him. He and H did some quick sketches and we agreed on what we wanted. He gave us an estimate and we agreed that he would order the lumber and have it delivered to our house. We would stain the wood on our own and he would would give us a call when he had a better idea of when he would get to us.
That was two months ago. There is no lumber in our back yard. We have not heard a peep from him. You would think he would at least order the lumber to lock us in with him.
H wants to just call someone else and ditch this guy. He wouldn't even bother calling the guy to let him know we were going another way. I feel like we have made a verbal agreement with him and at least need to verbally cancel before we go elsewhere. I don't want a double batch of lumber in my yard.
I know I would like the fence he would build so much better than what we could get elsewhere...so I want to give the guy another chance. Am I crazy?
Note that the current fence is in bad, bad shape and super ugly. We have stacks of broken fence and other miscellaneous things stacked in places to keep the dogs in, so there is more than a bit of an eyesore situation at the moment.
Note also that a regular 'ol fence from a fencing company would end up costing us about half of what carpenter guy would charge.

I just a friendly gal looking for options.
