Prenatal workouts?

So Amazon and Netflix have nothing to stream for free.  Any DVD recommendations?  I'd like something with cardio/strength/yoga that is separated out into trimesters like this (which may be what I end up getting):  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057BW6EK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Re: Prenatal workouts?

  • Hmm, I think Shiva Rose has a prenatal yoga workout split out by trimesters and the appropriate modifications. I think target has it. If I remembered, I don't think my OB had any restrictions on any type of exercise other that consider avoiding lifting anything heavier than 25 lbs, mainly to prevent back injury more than anything.

  • Yeah, I did my normal aerobics classes until about 35 weeks, and I only stopped because I was still working full time, work was crazy, and I needed a break, so exercise went.

I've had patients who did triathlons, 5 and 10Ks, etc. It is all about knowing your limits, keeping hydrated and finding something you enjoy.

  • I'm doing my regular 40 minutes of walking a day, but I'd really like to tone up a bit and be strong for labor.  I don't think my calves of steel will help me there so much.

DH freaked out when I tried to carry a case of water yesterday or I take laundry downstairs.  Dude, I'm not a cripple!

  • I quit my prenatal stuff because I got bored with it (and the yoga person was so perky I wanted to punch things) but the Summer Sanders workout has 3 trimesters.   I was doing the 30 DS level stuff pre pregnancy, so now I'm just modifying the Beachbody Brazil buttlift workouts I bought in case this cycle had failed.

I stalk the exercise & fitness board on TB for ideas and have heard good things about this one too

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
  • why does it need to be "prenatal"?

you wouldn't want to do something as intensive as insanity, and i think yoga would be difficult because your center of mass would be changing constantly.

keep up walking and try to do some basic squats/lifts etc. with like 8lb hand weights. (eg. do a squat while doing a bicep curl with 8lb weights) one thing that my trainer put into my workouts (and something I have seen from Jillian) is that the strength moves always work the full body. (body weight for the legs, hand weights for upper body)

also, make sure if you amp up the workouts that you are eating enough.

i really do't have any idea how people do it. i felt like i was going to V* for about the first 16-17 weeks, 24/7. I tried to eat better, but i didn't make a conscious effort to work out more.
  • My only work out was sleeping, being a b!tch, getting my feet to swell and shoving food in my mouth. I got nothing.
  • Mostly, I want prenatal because 1. I can and 2. I would probably over do it otherwise, because I'm stupid like that.

Up until the last few days, I had been feeling pretty good.  Now?  Not so much.  I can't eat anything.

  • I know it's not what you asked and I'm not trying to talk you out of prenatal, just throwing in that my OB said that as long as my heart rate was <130 bpm and I didn't do anything dumb like jump from 10# weights to 50#, I was good.
  • I didn't do anything prenatal and just continued with my normal workouts with Baby A. For Body Pump, I didn't increase the weights at all and took breaks when I needed. With yoga, I just modified what I could and couldn't do. The yoga helped any back pain I had, which was minimal and it just felt good to stretch.
