Wedding Woes

Thanks, MOM

I know she doesn't mean to sound snotty, but that's how she comes off sometimes.  We made plans to get together tomorrow, since she hasn't seen the Woozle for a few weeks, and my schedule is wide open.  She took me out to lunch the day after I was laid off, which was really nice.  She suggested going out again tomorrow, her treat.  I said lunch sounded great, but I'd take her out this time.  Her response:

"Well, you can't take me out since both of you are unemployed."

Ouch.  True, yes, but still.

I know I don't have to defend myself here, but we have money, plus I have severance.  It's not like we're spending it lavishly, but lunch for two adults and a toddler won't exactly bankrupt us, you know?  And it's more the way she said it.

I'm probably being too prickly, right?

You know, I'm meeting a friend for coffee at Panera first thing tomorrow--I should just get a sandwich tray and a big salad while I'm there.  Then by the time my mom arrives, it will be a fait accompli.  Sit down and eat your chicken salad, Mom.

Well, when my mom's unintentionally snotty, I just make a joke out of it. "Geez, thanks, Mom. I like being reminded I'm a failure!" And then she'll apologize for being snotty and that's not what she meant and SCENE.

But the moment's gone now, so I'd just let it go.

I think you are being too prickly and that your mom is trying to be nice, but it came out wrong.

You're probably just a lttle touchy and she didn't think too much.

Next time just offer to make her lunch or something.

Yeah, too prickly.  Go on her dime and order the lobster.
