Wedding Woes

BR-Orajel is apparently against the rules now TOO.

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm250264.htm

Well, at least not on BABIES.
So the debacle of me buying it, me realizing it was expired, the Mr. driving back to rite-aid to get new, not expired orajel (she was asleep before he managed to get back) was all for naught.
At least I got chineese out of it, since the good place in town is next to Rite Aid

BACKGROUND: Methemoglobinemia is a rare, but serious condition in which the amount of oxygen carried through the blood stream is greatly reduced. In the most severe cases, methemoglobinemia can result in death. Patients who develop methemoglobinemia may experience signs and symptoms such as pale, gray or blue colored skin, lips, and nail beds; headache; lightheadedness; shortness of breath; fatigue; and rapid heart rate. Methemoglobinemia has been reported with all strengths of benzocaine gels and liquids, and cases occurred mainly in children aged two years or younger who were treated with benzocaine gel for teething. The signs and symptoms usually appear within minutes to hours of applying benzocaine and may occur with the first application of benzocaine or after additional use. The development of methemoglobinemia after treatment with benzocaine sprays may not be related to the amount applied. In many cases, methemoglobinemia was reported following the administration of a single benzocaine spray.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Benzocaine products should not be used on children less than two years of age, except under the advice and supervision of a healthcare professional.
  • Adult consumers who use benzocaine gels or liquids to relieve pain in the mouth should follow the recommendations in the product label. Consumers should store benzocaine products out of reach of children. FDA encourages consumers to talk to their healthcare professional about using benzocaine.

Whatev. We use the orajel. We are careful not to use it too much/too often, but that stuff is hella awesome.

Also, my 16 month old is as big as some 3yos, so that helps me feel a little better about it.

ETA: I did have a lot of love for the hylands tablets, too, but alas, I have not seen any since the recall.  Booooo!

gbck- have you tried the frozen carrot yet? I want to do this with E but I'm scared he will shove it down his throat or something. He chews on EVERYTHING. I can't kiss him without him trying to bite my face. It is really cute to see him haul his feet up over that giant tummy to get them in his mouth.

I have been looking all over for those damn teething tablets and they are no where to be found. I have found every other type of tablet including bedwedding tablets.

Also awesome in the mesh feeder: frozen grapes.  Tastier than carrots, but still great on those sore gums.  But you do have to replace them fairly often (at least compared to carrots, I'd presume.)
Frozen peach or apple slices would also probably work well.

I know I'm not a reg, but just some thougths:

We skipped the Orajel and Hylands.  We use:

Mesh feeder with anything fruit in it (my LO loves frozen bananas).

Rough terrycloth washcloth, soaked in water, and put it in the fridge.  I wrap a finger in that and rub her gums (it seems to help the teeth break through) or let her chew it.

I also keep dry washcloths in her crib for her to chew on at will.

Also-brushing her "teeth" (gums) with a baby toothbrush,  She really enjoys that, so it must feel good.

I also keep whiskey around-but that's mostly for me :P

We used SoCo. No joke. I wasn't going to futz around with tooth gel or mesh feeders or frozen anything that would make a mess. So I rubbed SoCo on her gums. She felt better, there was no mess, and she's as normal as she can be now.

I know Bacons, but...we don't keep liquor in the house.
    BOO.
(The Mr's issues w/ alcohol are behind us and he's really OK...but he says he doesn't like having it sitting in the cabinet; it makes it to acessable.  He'll deal when we do have it but he doesn't like it there.  Although He encourages me to keep red wine (which he hates) in there :)
