Random thoughts re: the diabeetus

105 fasting is not bad at all if you're not on insulin.  My average, WITH lots of insulin was 115.   (I kept an excel spreadsheet, so I just referenced that.)

My 1 hour glucose test at 28 weeks was 346.   My doctor called me the next morning and sent me to the hospital, where I had a nice 3 day stay to get my blood sugar under control.
So, yeah, they thought I was probably diabetic before pregnancy.   And I still am 19 mths after giving birth.

When I was pregnant, I was able to still have some treats (such as a junior size frosty from Wendy's) as long as I balanced it out with a lot of protein and no other carbs.   I would have 10 nuggets from Wendy's, a side salad with ranch, and a junior frosty for lunch just about every day.   I was always craving ice cream, and had to have it.  This meal worked for me without messing up my blood sugar.

Ice cream was my go to treat, because at least it had some protein in it and vitamins.

Snicker ice cream bars only have approx 15g of carbs, so that's a great snack.   And very satisfying.

I also ate tons of cheese.   Cheese is very low carb and high protein.    For a snack, I'd portion out however many crackers equaled 15g of carbs and ate them with as much cheese as I wanted.

The Laughing Cow cheese wedges only have 1g of carbs per wedge and have a nice, rich taste.   Great spread on a cracker, celery or apple slice.

Cottage cheese, cottage cheese, cottage cheese.   Low carb, high protein.  Fills you up.

Peanut butter is your friend, too.   Lots of protein.  Great spread on a graham cracker for snacks.

Eggs - - very high protein.   I ate a 3 egg omelet loaded with sharp cheddar every morning.   I became an omelet-making expert.  I occasionally had a side of turkey sausage with it, depending on how hungry I was.

For me, I could have just about ZERO carbs at breakfast.   I couldn't even have a glass of milk or cream in my coffee or it would get me out of whack for the whole day.  If I ate fruit it would have to be in the afternoon or evening.

Dinner would typically be a great big salad with lots of meat and cheese (watch out for carrots and croutons, as those can add a lot of carbs)   OR some kind of meat with a side of veggies.   I ate lots of chicken breasts and steak.  I would sometimes add a slice of bread with butter just because I missed having bread.  :(

I did allow myself to have cake and punch at my baby shower.  I didn't care if my doctor's got mad at me - - I was only going to have 1 baby shower in my life and I didn't want anything to stop me from enjoying it.

The South Beach Diet cookbooks have a lot of yummy recipes for dinner.

Obviously, the stuff I ate wasn't exactly low fat, but at that point I didn't really care.
I weighed about 165 lbs before getting pregnant (on a petite frame) and gained about 30 the whole time.   I lost 25 lbs as soon as I gave birth (or at least by the time I got out of the hospital) and 5 more lbs in the next few weeks.  I'm back to 165 lbs.   (I could stand to lose at least 20 if not 40.)

All that being said, I had a healthy, beautiful, SMALL baby.   They induced me at 38 1/2 weeks because they thought she was going to be huge.   They measured her at almost 8 lbs at my 36 wk level 2 ultrasound.   When she was born, she weighed 6lbs 10oz!!!!!   Last I checked, that is not huge.  :)

Let me know if you have any questions!
