Wedding Woes

so, this is people being stupid, right? 'alternate' isn't a bad word...

unless you're so far into the religious right, you think Pat Robertson speaks truth often.

So, for my big work, 'fun with science!' event, we allow schools to bring mutlipe groups of kids.  They bring a 'primary team' and an 'alternate team'.

We have been asked by parents to change the name because it's 'offensive' to have them be 'alternate'

Apparently it brings to mind 'alternative lifestyles' and that causes problems

I told boss that I was going to ignore this, because it's stupid.  Incredibly stupid.

(useless background, to make it longer)

(it's complicated, but basically we hve to follow certain national guidelines to have the competition done right.  Each team is limited to 15ish kids.  If a school has, say, 40 kids that want to play, they can NOT have 40 kids on a team, they can have a 2nd, 'JV' team that's their alternate team that can also have 15ish kids.  That team can 'play', it just can't win the overall award stuff)

We can't call it the 'b' team--the national has A, B, and C based on age of students, some of these are already "b' students and that will cause chaos.
We can't say 'secondary' because it'll cause confusion because 'secondary' has an educational meaning.

So my option is to leave it, or call them team #1 and team #2 (bad idea because teams also have numbers for various things)--I think little Beauford is going to get teased more for being "#2" than for being 'alternate'
