Wedding Woes

question for vendors

hi ladies!  totally crashing here...according to the knot its been 1430 days since my wedding...tear!  congrats to all of you on your upcoming wedding days!

I'm writing in with a question- my friend recently called off her wedding (6 weeks from now) due to finance questionable behavior. now they are arguing over the finances.  legally, who is responsible to pay? the couple was going to pay for the whole wedding themselves.  she is trying to make him pay since his actions caused the cancellation of the wedding.  he is saying it should be 50/50.  just curious as to who is responsible and how this was handled by vendors in the past so I don't give the couple any crap advice!

thanks yall!

Whose name is on the contracts? If it's his, then he is obligated to pay. If it's hers, than she is obligated to pay. If it is both of their names, they are both obligated to pay. How they hash that out is their own business. I don't think the law states much beyond that...but I am not a lawyer. I just play one on TV.

(I'm not a lawyer and this is not legal advice)

I'd say they should split it 50/50.  They went into this planning as a couple and I imagine both of their money went to vendors, etc.  I would advise your friend to pay her half.  It'll be way cheaper (& much less hassle) than a divorce or law suit later.

Ditto all of the above. Whoever signed the contracts is (almost definitely) legally responsible for payment.

Another thing to consider - at this point, they may be contractually bound to pay the full amount anyway.  I'd like to think I'd just have a giant damn party in that situation, since I'd be out the money anyway.

But really, we are not lawyers.
