Wedding Woes

WWWWD?

DH is going to China soon.  When we have traveled internationallly before, we temporarily activate international roaming on our phones so that phone calls can be made (even though it is expensive per min).

We switched to prepaid phone plans.  It is saving us a ton of money since we use cell phones the same way people did ten years ago: no smart phones, no texting, only a handful of minutes a month.

Although their website says differently, a chat with AT&T customer service says that you can't use their pre-paid plan outside of the US and Mexico.  So if DH wants his own cell phone, he would have to sign up for a new contract and we would lose all of our money saved.

He will be traveling with a group of about six other people from the university.  I'm guessing that at least one of them will have a working cell phone and suggested that he just buy one of them lunch or give them $10 in exchange for making a quick call to me to let me know that he got there.   He said that absolutely no, he would not do that.  It would be too embarassing.  He feels a lot of shame around the pre-paid phone thing, I guess.

I would be fine if I knew that he would have access to e-mail.  He will take his ipod touch, so if he can find wi-fi, he can e-mail me.  But he isn't going to be in a major city and I don't think he can count on that.

So, WWWWD:

1 - Since he is with a group, assume that I would hear through school if something was wrong and just choose not to communicate - no news is good news.

2 - Insist that he swallow his pride and use someone else's phone

3- Sign him up for a new, shiny cell phone contract

We used calling cards in Australia.  They aren't very expensive.

They are staying in a bare-bones dormatory.  I doubt he will have a phone in his room.

if it's a university, it probably has the internets.  (asia is WIRED.  yes, everywhere)  i doubt he will have a phone in his room either, because everyone has cell phones.

however, he really does need to suck it up, just so you know he's not this lady:

I think I'm just going to kiss him goodbye and try to tolerate no communication.

Although I have a feeling that once he gets to know these people, he won't have such a problem borrowing a phone.  Unless they all turn out to be raging lunatics, of course.

We've already had so many fights about this trip.  I hate that when he travels somewhere he feels like he has to buy all new clothes, every travel gadget in the store, travel size everything, etc.  I was smart this time and caught him yesterday on his way to the store with a mile-long list.  I was able to chop off half of the list by digging through the closet and proving that we already owned these things.  Then he still bought some of it at the store.  He spent $120 at Wal-Mart buying travel sized shampoos and other crap.  He bought travel sizes of products I have never seen him use in 5 years of marriage and every over-the counter drug he could ever dream of needing.  And I guess only a crazy person would take a used deck of cards.  Of course he needed a new one!  And this is only a two week trip.

And then he turns around and complains about not having enough money to travel as much as he would like and I have to use every ounce of self control to keep from strangling him.

    lol

Zzilla we need to send them on a trip together.  We can point and laugh as they drag their 300 lb bags onto the plane.
