NYC Travel Advice?

My husband and I are thinking of taking the train down to NYC for our 1st anniversary/honeymoon. We're only going for a day and a half, so I'm trying to pack in as much as possible.

What are the sites that you consider 'must do' for tourists? I haven't been since I was 3, so I don't remember that much. What's a good area to stay in?

Thanks!

Zilla, I know I'm from the south and all, but I wasn't all that impressed with Juniors. Maybe, I'm a hard judge of some greens or something. It was good, but not worth the hype.

    Yes, I'm post jacking.

It depends on what you like to do, but you could also ask on the Nest Travel board.  They DO like these types of questions.

Zzilla, clearly, I need to take you on the food tour of NYC. You've lived here your whole life and are sticking to chains? I'm disappointed.

I'm not from NY, and I think I've eaten more places there than Zilla.

I did enjoy B Smith's place. Small portions, but that's the East Coast for ya. Zilla, you really should stop fighting moving to Tx, this is chain city around these parts.

Ooops, sorry if I made a mistake asking. Come to think of it, I live on Cape Cod, and it bugs me when people are like... well, what's there to do besides beaches? Dude, I don't know any of that tourist sh*t, do some research and figure it out for yourself!

Oh, and thanks for the recommendations!

This place will NOT waste your time, I guarantee it. AND it's a bunch of guys running around with MEAT ON SWORDS!!!!!!

That's it... the 4 of us will have to go out to dinner (and we'll do the choosing ;) ) I have a great babysitter for the kiddos.

There is a hotel across from the Ziegfield Theater I would recommend. Also, go to Katz deli and Ray's pizza. If there isn't a specific show that you want to see and you are flexible, they sell half-priced tickets in Times Square.

I would highly recommend one of the hop on hop off buses. You get toured around but have options. Harlem can be a lot of fun, the Village is great, SoHo for overpriced boutiques, 5th Ave so you can drool at the windows, Central Park, Chelsea Market (foodnetwork studios is there - you never know who you'll run into.)

I think I need to make a trip with DefConn to NYC so we can have an OMGWTFBABYGTG and you guys can take me all these fun places.  I can get hotels el cheapo through work and my vacation reimbursement.

Except for Outback and Olive Garden.  No eating anywhere that I can go to here.

Junior's is only really good for the cheesecake. The dinner food isn't that great.

In response to the Outback talk, I had Outback for lunch today and it was great! We went to the one on 23rd and 6th.

A great touristy place to eat is Shake Shack, it's right in Madison Square Park on 23rd and Madison. The burgers are, arguably, the best in the city! The fries are great too and get a concrete (ice cream) if you go. The line can be ridiculously long though so it's better to get there at 11 when they open and have a really early lunch.

Central Park and Strawberry fields are great for any tourist. Rockefeller Center also.

Peanut Butter & Co. and S'Mac are both downtown and are good places to eat. You can tell what each specializes from the names.

My favorite museum is the American Museum of Natural History but you can spend a whole day there.

If you are in Times Square, there is a Shake Shack on 44th and 8th but the one in the park is better.

The New Year's Eve ball is actually out all year round so if you look up in Times Square at the building it's on, you can still it.

For beer drinkers, the Pony Bar on 10th and about 45th or 46th is great. They do $5 drafts and are constantly pulling out new kegs. They also have a great turkey chili.

The Intrepid (an aircraft carrier) Museum is on the west side but I haven't been there in years.

If you try to do the Statue of Liberty, buy your tix in advance  online. Also, buy the accompanying audi tour. It's especially helpful at Ellis Island.
