Wedding Woes

So my mom wants a wedding shower

yes, for her 2nd wedding.  I already told her that she needed to have a shower where the guests get to take something out of her house- she and her FI could combine their households to appear on Hoarders.   On Tuesday, she tells me that she was looking at the C&B website and how much she wants a wedding shower.  Dude, you're marrying a guy w/ plenty of money - just buy what you want.

Now, I told her to splurge on her dress because you only get married once or twice but a shower, for reals?  I think I'm going to have a heart-to-heart w/ her on Monday during wedding dress extravaganza pt. 2.

in lieu of gifts people donate to their favorite charity. She gets a party and others benefit from it.

I agree.  have a fun little party/gathering, but maybe sponsor a family in need or an animal shelter or children's hospital or something, or yes, start to give away stuff.

Whe H and i moved in together, we had FOUR beds (yes, beds. 3 of them were his), FOUR sets of measuring cups, and four of a lot of other things, for some reason.  And we were only 27 - we were merging 2 apartments, basically, but not whole lives' worth of stuff.

Ditto the lingerie shower.  Or stock the bar or some other theme that avoids bringing more platters and vases into the house.

You know, they like wine.  Maybe I could host a wine tasting party w/ appetizers and finger food.  Everyone could bring two bottles of wine - one for the couple and the other for sharing w/ the group.  It could be a couple's thing so that could make it fun.   I hate stuffy womenfolk gatherings.

I am giggling at your idea of a shower where each guest takes some of their stuff away.

Did I tell you guys that her FI's house is a 70s country-themed time capsule, complete w/ his dead wife's clothes STILL in the master closet and their wedding picture on the dining room wall?  She's been dead for 25 years, so I think that's creepy.  I told mom she should just put their wedding picture next to it on the wall and say how much she misses her sister-wife.

If you could see the look on my face...

I can't believe she didn't bail after the first time she saw that.

Yeah, that part really creeps me out.  She just told me the other day about the clothes and wedding picture.  If she told me this 5 years ago when she first start dating him, I'd tell her to run.

I maybe get the picture.  Maybe.  But the clothes, and after five years of dating someone else?  I get not throwing them away or giving them away, but damn, box that stuff up.

Did he have children with the dead wife?

Amy Sedaris suggests that every party you host should have a "for sale" table to help you cover your expenses.

    Yes, they adopted two children.

I hope that since my mom will now be a grandma to his grandchildren, it'll take the pressure of me.
