BR Question

Is it normal to put laundry detergent, baby shampoos and dish drying racks (presumably for bottles?) on a baby registry?

I'm looking at a friend's registry and it's making my eyebrows leap off my face.

I'm gonna go with yes. Some gift givers like giving a basket with stuff like that in it.

Little things like that I think you should probably be buying yourself.

It's not like they registered for some fancy baby detergent. It's a bottle of Gain!

I don't know. I just think it's interesting what people decide to throw on there.

That is true. And I see the point about some people wanting to put together a basket of stuff.

I just figured I'd buy all that stuff myself, but everyone's different.

Is ti Gain free?  I'm trying to figure out whether she thinks it's for the baby, or she's just trying to cross some household items off her shopping list.

I could see the bottle racks and the baby shampoo, but the Gain has me wondering.

Upon second look - they want TWO bottles of Gain. Just regular Gain.

And confession: I was looking to see if PPP has registered anywhere yet. I'm sure that registry will be full of video games, DVDs, various electronics, and gift cards.

A bottle rack I can see.  Baby shampoo or detergent is a little odd.

Are you sure it's not one of those situations where someone bought her a gift and also some laundry detergent for themself and when they scanned the registry all of their purchases were added?

I don't mind the drying rack, but I think things like toiletries should not be on registries. People want to give you stuff the baby's going to wear or play with, not things that are going to be used to clean poop and vomit.

we bought our own detergent -someone bought us a gift set with shampoo, etc. but it wasn't on the registry. i didn't register for diapers either, although may add them for the sake of the completion coupon

I've never known anyone to reigster for baby shampoo, but every shower I've ever been to, they get at least 2 of the J&J baby bath gift sets with all the stuff needed to clean the baby.  It's usually from the people who give them the baby bath or towels and washcloths.  Hell, I gave my friend her baby bath and some towels for her baby and I think I bought some shampoo and lotion to 'complete' the gift.

As far as detergent, I'm WTF-ing regular Gain.  But it could have been added by mistake.

But some of the 'smaller' stuff may be just to have gifts on your registry in several price ranges.

eh. Unless you want the 10% off if no one buys it for you.  I mean, if someone does want to give a gift basket of toiletries, it's not like there's any reason a parent would specifically request Johnson's & Johnson's bedtime bath vs. their regular baby bath.  If the buyer wants to get fancy with organic baby shampoo, that's another thing.

I think this is actually a pretty common gift - a baby bathtub full of baby bath things - baby wash, shampoo, bath toys, bath books, baby towels, baby washcloths, stuff like that. No?  It's a great thing for groups, since you can buy a lot or a little, you know?

we used the registry as a "everything in one place" list.  we had shampoo on there, but we didn't buy a separate rack or special detergent.

i didn't put my breast pump and nipple cream on the registry, but i did buy it and had it added to the registry (in the "did not request but did receive" column) so i could keep track of it.

again, i wanted to spare anyone the embarrassment of buying it and me the embarrassment of writing that thank you note.

[QUOTE]I plan to register for anything and everything. people can choose to buy what they want, to ignore the rest, or ignore the registry altogether. i like the completeion discounts, and the fatc that some registries give you a bonus for  money back - so that means i can register for what i want, but it myself, and get perks if there are any.

That's why I will be putting a breast pump on my registry at some point.  Probably after my showers, but I want to get the discount if there is one.  Those suckers aren't cheap.

judge away...I put shampoo on mine as a way of controlling gifts.

I know my family, they're all about practical gifts (which is preferred by me, really).  I didn't want 45 Johnson & Johnson gift baskets so I put one on there so it could be marked 'purchased' when someone in my family got it for me.  And it worked (mostly)

(I did also reg for the diaper rash cream that's cloth safe...same person who marked the above shampoo of the list bought me that.  I love my great-aunt who is practical and snarky)
