Wedding Woes

Mother-Daughter Dress Dilemma

I'm getting married next April and have already been engage for about a year. My fiance and I are just now getting around to wedding planning. My granmother died shortly after our engagement and now I finally feel ready to plan.

Well, I know that one of the first things to do is find your dress and I'm excited about it. But here's my dilemma...

I live in Maryland and my mother lives in Maine. She's an innkeeper and her business is typically busy from about May through October. I'm ready to start dress shopping but my mom insists on going the first time I look for a dress. However, she won't be able to visit me until November - five months before the wedding.

I'm worried that five months is not nearly enough time and that waiting so long would stress me out. I don't want to buy a dress without my mother seeing it first, but I would at least like to get an idea of what kind of dress I like.

Any suggestions on how to handle my mother?

  • 5 months is adequate time.

Would it be possible for you to go up there for a couple of days and do some dress shopping with mom on one of her days off during the summer?

if your mom insists on being there for dress shopping, the onus is on her to make the time.

as for you getting an idea of what dress you like, use the internets and magazines.

  • 5 months could be enough time.  Talk to the dress shop about it.  However, my dress took 7 months.

There's got to be some common ground.  Is there absolutely no way she can come down for a weekend?  Would it be possible for you to go up to her on a weekend?
  • why not go up and visit your mom for a weekend? I'm sure she'd appreciate the effort.

I live in Philly and my parents live in Pittsburgh - I flew out for a weekend to go dress shopping with my mom about 6 months prior to my wedding.
