A link to a post, and a poll

Poll:  Where you live, is smoking generally accepted inside buildings?  Do you know of anywhere, besides the set of Mad Men, that smoking is generally accepted everywhere like it was in the 80s?

Nowadays, I assume anywhere I go is smoke-free unless I know firsthand that it's not.   I wouldn't even trust an ashtray that was just sitting there.   Smoking is pretty much verboten inside any place I can think of.

Unless of course, it's a bar.   All the bars in Indy do allow smoking.  And there's a pub by our house that is half bar/half restaurant that allows smoking in the bar area (that's not closed off).

ETA:  This post makes it sound like I'm a smoker.  Which I'm not (anymore...I reformed).

Crazy.  Illinois went smoke-free a little over a year ago.  St. Louis city and county went smoke-free as of 1/2/11.

And I thought we were some of the last ones - STL airport still had smoking lounges until this law passed, FFS.

I mean sure, tobacco powerhouses like NC won't have laws on the books for a while, but public buildings? office buildings? Community center? No way.

And I would SO be posting this on his FB.  Right there as a comment under "I've been smoke-free for 68 days"  I'd have to put "I think you mean 32 days, since the one you had at Joeys' brithday party."  And I'd repost it every time he deleted it, at least until I knew his pregnant wife saw it.

    What an asshat.

It is allowed in the casinos. It is not allowed in any of the bars, unless it has a patio (snoking on patios is permitted). In order for a bar to have indoor smoking, they have to meet very strict requirements - very few actually meet the requirements. Same goes for the hooka bars, which the state is really cracking down on and also, very few actually meet the requrements.

    Laws vary by state.

I think its pretty much all smoke free inside any building, unless it's a club or nightclub, maybe a bar.  I can't remember what the city did with the smoking in bars business.  I'm such a loser that I can't recall who lit up where.

In some places, like the university hospital here, smoking is not allowed ANYWHERE on campus whatsoever.  Not inside, not outside, not even a greenspace away from your workplace.  I have a real problem with that one, and I don't smoke.

Oh, and what DG said, all public buildings, including community centers, schools, and hospitals are smoke-free. You are supposed to smoke 25 feet from doors and windows, but enforcement of that is tricky. No one wants to assume responsibility for that. And also complicated by this matter, public buildings should have been labeled tobacco free, but they weren't. All of the public health messages have said smoke free, so The Ogre tried to use her friggin e-cigarette in the office. Blerg...

dharma - many of the colleges and universities are going that way. You can't even smoke in your car on some campuses. It is geting really restricted. Pretty soon, you won't be able to smoke anywhere, except in your own home, that you own. They are going after people smoking in their cars, period. As in, if you do, you have to keep the windows rolled up.

We aren't smoke free.  That would be un-American!!1!!!!

But what kind of a dummy would smoke in a hallway instead of going outside?  I don't know if I would demand that the BIL pay but I would rat him out.

zsa - you are in one of the few states that is holding on to not being smoke-free. If you look at places like CA and NY it is drastically different than where we live. The FDA also just approved new visual warning for cigarette packs. I am interested to see how that impacts smoking rates? Especially compared to how increases in price per pack affects smoking rates. It should be interesting.

Ohio is smoke free everywhere.  I do remember going to jury duuty 5ish years ago.  I was shocked that there were ashtrays inside the courthose and on people's desks.

I don't think the visual warnings will do much of anything.  People who smoke know that it is bad for them, they just don't care.

They've started playing an anti-smoking PSA here that shows an open heart surgery and I can't watch it.  I have to cover my eyes or turn away.   It's so disturbing.

mrs. conn - The state of NY produced a lot of those commercials and is giving them away to other states.

zsa - I am inclined to agree with you. I also predict that people will just buy package holders to cover up the images or something along those lines.

In CA legislators want to ban smoking outdoor public places.

The indian casino nearest to us has smoking sections. That's the only place I know of that allows indor smoking at all.

In Oregon you can't smoke in bars, restaurants, or within ten feet of any door. I am not sure about the casinos.

If there is going to be a no-smoking casino, it'd probably be in Oregon. Oregon is one of the most aggressive anti-tobacco states.

The only place I can think of (aside from either outside of a bar on the sidewalk or on a bar patio) is the Native American casino that has a smoking section. It's tiny and in a completely different building.

This includes my current and former apartment complex. At the current, one can only smoke outside on the balcony. At the former, it was allowed in any non-comunal space (so in your house or the balcony of your house, but no where else).
