Hi everyone! I've been lurking around the forums for the past year or so, and an issue recently came up and I'm completely at a loss with how to accept it/comes to terms with it. I thought of the forums and I'm hoping that someone would be willing to read and lend some advice.
My fiancé comes from a troubled background - him and his mom lived with his abusive father until he was a teenager. His father is now completely out of his life and his mother has been trying to pick up the pieces. She has been stigmatized by her family, however, for being divorced and unemployed.
In an attempt to make her feel better, as she is having trouble financially and does not have support romantically, my fiancé tries to help her in anyway that he possibly can. This is one of the many reasons why I love him, but since he and I got engaged, things have changed. He's taken on this "my mom and me" against the world attitude and I'm slowly realizing there's no place for me in it. His mother also changed - she even said to me that I'm "taking" all that she has left. I was (still am) assuming that it will fade once we're married, but I'm just not so sure anymore.
We're a close-knit group of people. No evil in-law situation, that's why I'm getting more confused & hurt as the wedding is getting closer. My fiancé just told me this morning that he wants to give a speech at the wedding about his mom and everything they have been through. I told him I was a little unsure about it and he brushed it off and said he wanted to do it for his mom. I'll admit, that I wrongly felt a twinge of jealousy, because it should be a day about us, not him and his mom. I feel his focus is on building his mom up, and not the fact that HIM & I are getting married.
Am I completely out of line for feeling this way? I feel ashamed for feeling this way, but I'm also really hurt by the situation. I was hoping you can lend some guidance with this situation because I'm feeling pretty lost right now.
