It started out full of fail (DH ruined the shirt he was going to wear and then we got all the way to my IL's and I realized I had left the diaper bag at home, so I had to go all the way back, which sucked)...but it turned into a total WIN!
We were invited out for dinner by a friend of DH's. DH went to HS with her and we only see her and her H if we go out to dinner with them or invite them to one of our parties. We went to Fogo De Chao (a Brazillian steakhouse aka meat coma central). We showed up and I asked how many people were coming and she said 20. I was thinking, "Oh wow...I wonder if all these people know each other. It will suck if they're all friends and we're the odd ones out."
It turned out that it was a total hodge-podge of people and no one really knew each other. We sat by these two brothers, one was there with his wife and the other, his girlfriend. They're a little older than DH and I.
The one guy is one of those hysterically inappropriate, boisterous people. He kept the conversation going and we were laughing our asses off all night. He and his wife have a 10 year old and 4 year old. By the end of the night, we exchanged phone numbers and he and DH are planning on going shooting. His wife asked me if I'd be interested in going to a women's retreat that is for women who want to learn how to use different weapons and whatnot (shooting, archery, self-defense)...Which I totally am.
For being unsure of how the night was going to go, DH and I really had the best time we've had in awhile. And we've (hopefully) made couple-friends-with-kids-who-like-to-have-a-good-time. Those are hard to find sometimes.
