Wedding Woes

Stupid, petty annoyances

- Why is it when you take your bags they put 15 lbs of stuff in one, but when you use their bags they put a loaf of bread in one bag, a carton of eggs in another, and so on?  I don't want 10 plastic bags

- Why does my kid fall asleep on the 3 min. drive home?

- Why don't people pick up after their dog?  We have a pile from a massive dog in our yard.

i keep the plastic bags and bring them with me the nest time i shop. i also use them to pick up after my dog on walks, which ties in with your #3 annoyance.

and i had no idea i get credit for reusing plastic bags. i knew i got a canvas bag refund, but i bring old plastic bags with me to wrap up my meats, and i got credit for those, too.

the kid falling asleep thing drives me bonkers, because those 3 minutes ill recharge mine for a long while.
  • What irks me about the bags is how I bring way more bags than I need to Whole Foods, and they still pack all the heavy items in one and the light ones in another.  Every single goddamned bag person there does it this way.  Do they train them to pack it stupidly?

  • I have a pet peeve with baggers and frequently shoo them away and bag my own.  And really, if you aren't using canvas bags yet, what are you waiting for?  They are soooo much easier to carry that the plastic things that cut into your palms.  You can fit more in and then toss it over your shoulder.

I don't always remember to bring them and I curse myself when I forget.  Although I do sometimes run low on plastic bags for dog poo and trash can liners.  But I usually get enough of those from stores other than the grocery store where I am less likely to bring in a canvas bag.

-I pick up after my pet.  Apparently it's a big issue around here, or the news station made it one anyway.

  • i use the grocery store bags to pick up after the dogs, too. I find a lot of uses for them around the house - and if it gets to be too much, we recycle them.

none of the stores around here gives you anythingfor using the canvas, and we use the others enough that I don't bring my own.

i love the canvas bags, and i hate when i forget to bring them. i try to leave a few in the car just in case. i can pack a lot in one bag and they are much easier to carry than plastic.

but i do like to get the plastic once in a while because of the million uses i have for them. i leave a few in the diaper bag, i use them for the bathroom trash can, picking up after the dog, re-using them at the grocery store, leaving a few in the car for car trash - LOTS of uses.

i like to also bag my own stuff just because it's a lot faster than waiting for the cashier to do it. most grocery stores around here don;t have a separate person to bag items. the last time i did go to a store that had a bagger, i forgot a bag at the register. that was a real PITA.

99% of the time I use the canvas, I just forgot this time.  Last time I was there they put 2 gallons of milk, a 2 L and several other items in one canvas bag.  She started to hand it to me saying "wow this is heavy!"  I told hear each gallon of milk was over 8 lbs and made her take stuff out to rebag.

    Jebus says doodoo unto others.
I just wanted to further share that.
  • Plastic bags are free, and we get no credits for using canvas, so I'm not switching anytime soon. It has to be economically worth my while, and giving up the plastic that I use all over the house just to buy new bags isn't.

Anywhere I go doesn't have separate bagging personnel, so I just arrange everything on the belt in sections. That way that's how it goes into the bags. And of course at Costco they box stuff - my only complaint there is they'll put one box in the bottom of the cart, and then one on the kid seat. If there's a box on the kid seat, I can't see over it. There's room for two boxes in the cart, people. Come on, now.

bmom, even if you don't care about recycling, you may like using canvas in conjunction with plastic just because they are a LOT easier to carry.

i only started using canvas because i kept getting them for free through work. i always like getting the plastic bags because i use them all over the place. but once i decided to try it because it seemed so trendy. it turns out, they are just plain easier. and i fit right in with the other do-gooders walking around the store purchasing their granola.  ;)

We have 2 uses for those little bags- bathroom trash and DH's lunch so we use no more than 3/wk.  What else do you use them for?

  • Cat litter, three or four little trashcans, trash bag in the car, wrapping up boots in the winter (like if I wear them to church, and change shoes, I don't want them melting all over the floor. It's dangerous in that loft), and anytime I need an extra bag. And H's lunch.

I also only get maybe 10 a month. Most of the shopping's still from Costco. And I never get them if I buy stuff I can carry or stick in my purse - like if I stop off for one thing or a couple small things.

I sewed something kinda gingham-y that I use most of the time, it holds a ton and was free and folds up well and I like it.  It's what I use if I have a small order.
I get pissy when the cashier at target doesn't give me my 5c.  And I swear, they NEVER remember.

But I do use the plastic bags that I end up with--cat litter is the #1 reason to have 'em.
  • dog poop
gather items for recycling (our bin is out by the garage - we keep a bag in the kitchen and run it out to the bin when it fills up)
    small trash cans
    lunches
in case of emergency/cleanup (diaper bag, cars, dog puke/accident)
small trash runs (anything i don't want sitting in the big can for a few days - meat scraps, dog puke/accident, occasional diaper )

i also put one on the counter and peel potatoes over it, and it makes cleanup a lot easier. i can save a paper towel because there's usually nothing to wipe up just yet. then i throw the bag away with the peels in it.

A lot of times I just dump the bathroom trash and leave the bag in it.  Especially the guest bath that is only ever tp rolls.

Potato peels go in the compost.
