Work Poll

I have a friend that works from 8-5, Monday - Friday. She works in the accounting department of a company nearby, and she's paid hourly.

As soon as 5PM hits, she is out of the office. She finds it strange that I sometimes stay later than 5:30 at my job, but I've told her that there are things that need to get done, etc. Also, I don't want my boss to think of me as the girl who races out as soon as the clock hits 5:30. I'm salaried, so I don't get overtime.

So, are out the door right at your scheduled departure time? Or does it depend on the day?

I'm paid hourly, so I'm out of here on time.  Unless I'm working OT.

I was always out as soon as possible. I worked to live, I didn't live to work.

If a crisis came up or something had to be finished, I would finish it and collect the overtime.

I'm not a fan of workplaces where ignoring the fact that you have a life is the way to get ahead.

I find that salaried people stay as long as it takes to get the work done, but also will skate out the door if everything is taken care of.

Hourly people, however, come and go according to the clock.

I work until I get done what I have to get done that day.  But I have plenty of (salaried) co-workers that fly out the door as soon as they have been in the building for 8 hours.  They don't always get their work done and everyone talks about them behind their backs.

Having a salaried job to me means that I don't worry about it when I occasionally take a 70 minute lunch or leave an hour early for a doctor appointment.  But I work WAY more than enough overtime to make up for that.

This.  My end time was 4:30, but I never left at that time.  It might be 5 it might be 4.  If I got to a natural stopping point before 4:30 I left.  If I was in a groove I'd stay.  There were also times I stayed until the next morning so I never felt guilty about long lunches or leaving early.

I stay until I'm done with what I"m doing. I also come in early. I'm salaried so the clock dictates nothing for me. Unfortunately. I also take work home with me.

Work doesn't dominate my life but if it's something big then I stay on it. This will probably change when Thistlebud comes.

I leave on time, usually trying to slink down the stairs, so Boss doesn't pull me into his office for a non-work related (usually political) talk that makes me leave at 5, 5:30, sometimes later.

I have been here until 7:30 having non-work related discussions with boss, but he insists I either leave early or come in late on a regular basis, so I won't comlain too much.

It depends on the day for me.

I stay late the first few weeks of school, and the first few weeks of second semester.

However, it's not rare for me to stay late if something comes up with a kid and I have to meet with parents.

If its your normal day I usually leave on time.

I like to come early a lot and do what I need to do before school starts. Once the kids come it's hard to do ot without interruptions.

We have to be in the office from 9AM-3:30PM M-F (minus lunch) and otherwise we have to work 40 hours each week. We get comp time for anything over 45 hours.

Very rarely do I leave at 3:30PM. If something needs to get done, it gets done.

No no. Wz, early on in my pregnancy, I read that it was a natural remedy for heartburn. I mixed a shot of it with water, drank it, and promptly threw up.

The bottle hasn't been touched since that day, and I now take Zantac 75 for heartburn ;)

I dunno.  I don't actually have set hours.  Sometimes I leave early, sometimes I stop in on a Saturday, sometimes I come in late, sometimes I leave late.

i am salaried - i will sometimes come early or stay late as necessary, but usually arrive and leave more-or-less at the same time.

i have flex hours and work a 9/80 with every other Friday off. the rule in the TX office is for normal working days you *must* be in the office between 8-3 (except lunch) but can be flexible with start and end times.

I'm out at 4:56 b/c that's when the time clock bumps up to 5.  I get here 10 minutes early and rarely take a full lunch, just the required 30 minutes.

This is a menial job.  I'm glad to have it, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it deserves (or requires) anything beyond it's description.  It's hourly, somewhat okay pay, far below my capabilities and nil chance of promotion/transfer b/c of who I work.  I do it well and fast and rarely have anything left to be done after 10:30 am.  If I do, it's b/c I'm saving it to have something to do tomorrow.

I leave every day by 4:30 because I have to pick up The Chubbster (unless pre-arranged with DH to pick him up). I'm in between 7:00 and 7:30 am. I do as much as I can between that time, and because of our current workload, I do have to come in at night for our evening patients.
