houseplant?

I have a couple of houseplants (different types of ivy and something else that I don't know that name of) in our LR that have started getting yellow leaves. I have no idea what is causing this problem.

They are getting enough water and are in different parts of the living room.

These plants are several years old and are in the same pots - so this shouldn't be a transplant shock issue.

I was trying to think if the same thing happened last year, and I don't recall this happening before.

Any ideas? Suggestions? One of the plants is looking downright anemic. I almost want to throw it away and get a new plant, but I feel badly killing something that is (barely) alive.

might be time to repot.  I think this happened with mine when the roots got too cramped.

  • Plant food.
  • Yes, your plant has sucked the soil dry of nutrients.

  • But one of the plants isn't even in soil. It is ivy in water.

  • Then I would try plant food first. Water may not be cutting it any more and the plant may be really low on nutrients.
  • I have some miracle grow, I'll try that.

  • What kind of water to you put in the ivy plant?  Filtered, Reverse Osmosis, Tap water?

Also, how is the temperature in this room, does it get a lot of sunlight than it is used to?

  • kpwedkk - I put tap water in the ivy. I have a Britta and could give it some filtered water.

The temperature in the room is scortching in the late afternoon. That room had a sliding glass door that faces the west - so the sun comes down on it full blast in the early evening. We close the blinds and run the A/C to keep it as cool as possible. However, we are battling the hottest summer since we have been here.

The plants should be used to the temps and the sunlight.

  • Well, MinM, I was thinking if it was filtered water, then tap water might do the plant some good, with other nutrients...  has the tap water changed, maybe more metallic than usual?  Maybe a pH test will help?  You can get one at Walmart in the pool section, for a few dollars, just to see what the tap water is at....

There might be a deficiency in iron as well, which a little bit of miracle gro, ( a few drops to the water) might help with the yellowing leaves.

Yellowing leaves can be caused by -
    - underwatering
    - overwatering
    - a mineral deficency, e.g. iron
    - and too much sun...

Try one thing at a time to see if the plant improves... e.g. try miracle gro first and then wait a few days to a week, and then try moving the plant to a more shady location, to see if that helps...

Also, if you have to repot (soil) plants, then try this link, for the fertilzer that might work for you - it follows a formula - potassium (K), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) for the right combinations needed for any plant, and to make it thrive...
