energy upgrades F/U

i asked about a solar attic fan a few weeks back and wanted to show some follow-up pics.

while we were just looking for a fan, we started talking to a company that does "green"/energy upgrades, and decided to get a full package. It was more than we were intitially looking to spend, but it is financed, and the payments are less than what we'll be saving each month, so it made sense to move forward.

a very conservative estimate is that we will save about 25-30% of our energy (gas/electric) bills each month (could easily be upwards of 40-50%). in a place where the AC is running from Feb-Nov/Dec, this adds up to a significant amount. we will get a 30% govt. rebate with our 2012 taxes on the total cost of the package, and I negotiated an extra 15% returned to us via check for participating in the marketing program.

to date, we've installed a radiant heat barrier, attic fan, had the ductwork resealed, had the doors resealed, and blown in another 5" or so of insulation. We're also having a film put on some of our windows to cut out UV rays and additional heat transfer on southern windows - they were out of stock so will be doing the install later in the week.

when all is said and done, the system is going to pay for itself in 3-4 years.

far end of the attic as seen from the drop down stairs. you could not see either end of the attic from the stairs before the installation. with all of the light reflecting, one CFL is enough to light the whole thing.

solar fan (in motion) - was spinning yesterday despite being overcast/rainy all day.

With the mods, the attic isn't supposed to heat up more than 10-15degrees above  the ambient temperature outside. It was in the low 70s yesterday,  and about the same temperature in the attic.

    Interesting.
  • That is awesome.  I wish I could do some upgrades like that to my house, but don't have the cash flow at the moment.  It's definitely on the list for the future.

We went to a green festival a couple of years ago and there was a vendor who had geothermal heating and air systems that could be retrofitted to your existing system.  I would really love to be able to do that.

we wouldn't have done it if not for the financing option / rebates / discounts.

the way the program is set up, we'll end up with payments of, say $70/month, but we'll be saving $100/month off our energy bills. the savings pays for the project each month, and then some. if we put the full $100 savings/month towards paying off the project cost, we'll pay the project off faster, minimize interest, and start realizing the full savings faster.
  • Hmmm...good to know, Barbie.  I may pick your brain at some point for more info.  Is it a national program, or just in TX?

  • i think the company we used is texas based (they mentioned work in Austin too) - but i'm sure there are others doing similar programs. the 30% tax rebate is federal. you may want to check with your local utility companies and state to see if they are offering rebates. (many aren't right now - when those get funded, they seem to dry up really fast)

I have been marketing a similar program within my company right now for lighting retrofit projects and using a similar explanation to the sales pitch by the green company - so i knew exactly where he was coming from. i talked with their marketing director in negotiating the additional discount and he offered me a job. when you look at the numbers, it shows whether it makes sense to do the improvements from a financial POV.

when we initially heard $5-10K investment we laughed at these guys - but when you realize you'll get all of that back in 3-4 years (in our case - if there's less room to improve, payback may be longer), and can pay it over time, it starts making a whole lot more sense.
