LOL... not sure if this is a serious request... but... let's see, my now-ex became abusive, emotionally and physically, after we'd become engaged. FI's g.f. was also emotionally abusive. Both relationships started in high school but lasted for years afterwards. 6 1/2  years total for me.  

I realized that I had to get out when my ex escalated from throwing things at me and holding me on the ground to actually almost hitting me, and I couldn't pretend that he wasn't just caught up in the heat of the moment anymore. 

FI's reasons are his business
 
and luckily, we found each other and became friends and that blossomed into something more. =P there are more 'gory' details, but not really anything i'm into sharing.

It really is slow.  It was a serious request, or as serious as I ever get, but it ended up not being all that gory.  For the record, I would have even accepted just "these relationships started in high school" as an answer.

j/k, although that's partially true, the real reason is, i didn't think of it and I got so excited about the family ring that FI gave me and then the ring that I got for him that I decided to do that...
