Hmm.  OK, that is an excellent start.  I mean "below" in the sense that I need "major" retailers, but not the biggest e-retailers in the universe. :)

I should have also specified that they should be competitors (e.g., Borders and Barnes & Noble).

So, starting with your suggestions, what would be a competitor of ...

    Overstock?

    Bluefly?

    Zappos?

    Old Navy?

I'd consider Zappos and Piperlime, but I don't really think they are at the same level, kwim?

i'd say that Overstock is a competitor of Amazon - they both have a wide assortment of products.

not as familiar with the others. I hate ON, and wouldn't shop online for shoes or clothes (unless i had already tried the product on in a store and was just going online for a different color) so i couldn't really help with the others.

so you mean 'smaller', not 'less quality?'

    Etsy?  (do they count?)
    thinkgeek.com

    staples.com, office depot.com, officemax

    NewEgg.com, tiger direct.com, bestbuy.com

Well, I'm not asking anyone to compare balance sheets or annual reports.  Just based on your own perception.

Basically, if you saw an article comparing Zappos and Shoebuy (or amazon & overstock, or amazon & walmart, etc.), would you think it was a valid "apples to apples" comparison?  Or would you think, "Well DUH, of course zappos has a better site, because they're a bigger company witha  bigger budget!"
