diet question

i have a very limited knowledge of the Paleo diet - but my understanding is lean meats (fish, grass-fed beef, free range poultry, game meat), vegetables, and fruit are in - legumes, grains, potatoes, and fats/oils are out/minimal. are dairy products out too? (i am assuming so because cows would need to be domesticated for the whole dairy thing)

if someone is a vegetarian, but is also doing paleo - what would they eat besides fruits and vegetables?

if dairy is out, what would be the primary complete protein source? (you have already eliminated animal proteins and legumes) - veggies have proteins, but they're not complete (limited amino acids) - and you would need to eat a shittion to get the daily recommended protein amount.

does this sound like a healthy combination to you?

Re: diet question

  • Um...I guess it depends on what you're doing it for.  It isn't for dietary restriction, I would imagine it is to increase protein intake and decrease extra simple carbohydrates.

I think fruit is mostly a no...actually.  More vegetables in order to avoid the sugars.

I think Paleo is good in theory as most people don't eat nearly enough protein to keep your body's lean muscle mass in good shape.

i'm not. i cut back on eating junk food, but i'm not going to try and restrict my diet like that.

crazy crossfit lady is always posting pics of her 15mo daughter with a plate of vegetables (she's like 3 weeks older than wolverine) with captions like "i love my little vegetarian/paleo baby"

i just don't see how the combination of vegetarian and paleo is healthy because there doesn't seem to be any real complete protein source. if she goes vegetarian, the kid would at least have dairy and beans as protein, but if paleo eliminates those, i don't know what else she's eating. i feel bad for the kid. the mom has made a few comments about her being underweight. i kind want to shake her and say, "of course she is, all you're giving her is fruit and vegetables"

ETA: i actually did post on one of the pics and ask about it (where do you get protein with the paleo + vegetarian) i'm curious - maybe there's some sort of really awesome super vegetable that she knows about.
  • Yes, protein is underrated in diets, especially with women.  And I'm talking animal protein, which of course as a VEGETARIAN you won't get.

    THIS!

Andplusalso:  the paleo diet + posting it on FB = GREAT BIG AW!!!!
  • I'm with AF, she assumes people will tell her "oh my gosh, you're so AWESOME".  But really they're thinking...I will just eat your candy for you...twatface.

  • So I swear I wasn't stalking you, but your comment on her FB post showed up in my feed.     I just want to say how YOUNEEK her kid's name is.   ;)
  • Ugh, I hate paleodiet people even more than I hate vegans.  If you want a life expectancy that's just long enough to pass on your genes and get the kids to the point where they can feed themselves and run from predators, then you might as well just eat junk food.

  • well, one positive - she responded that she eats meat now (still organic, grass fed, free range, costs 10x as much...) and isn't 100% paleo (still has milk) - just the particular meal was when she took the pic - so at least the poor kid is getting  some protein!

yeah. it almost sounds like a body part.
  • I can't criticize the swanky beef - it's what the Kuuses eat, too.  Hey, if the cow has to die, best that it have a decently enjoyable life first, right?

Really, Kuus?   This tarnishes my image of you.
  • That I eat meat at all, or that I eat the organic, pasture-raised meat?
    image
  • That you eat the "organic" kind.    Oh well, all idols must fall sometime.
  • What's so terrible about wanting my meat to have been treated humanely?  This is consistent with my stance on cruelty-free beauty products and such, no?
    image
  • I have lots of things I'd like to add, but the main one is really that the organic pasture raised meat isn't actually more expensive.  It's the real cost of agriculture production.  The meat from the big 4 meat companies are subsidized, so you are paying the same price, it's just part of it is coming from your taxes.

  • I'm climbing out of my luker hole for this one - AF, why is it such a crime to eat organic meat?

Beef tastes better when cows are eating what they are supposed to eat, not to mention being pumped full of chemicals and hormones.
