s/o disclosing convictions

Back in the day, FIL was convicted of and spent 18 months in prison for a felony. He was pardoned, so he has the distinction of being an ex-con but not a felon. Anyway, MIL knows, H and his brother have known since they were little, I've known since pretty much the day I met FIL, our kids will know (we've already discussed it). My parents do not know. FIL doesn't particularly care if they know, but H and I hope they go to their graves without this information. Things could get difficult when we have big-mouthed children.

That is a fabulous idea.

No, I think there's a possiblity that children would have a boyish fascination with jail coupled with a non-understanding of the fact that not everything is everyone's business. Obviously we would try to prevent this. But I ruined every gift we ever got my mom when I was between the ages of 3 and 8, and when my little sister was potty training she screamed through Sears one day that she peed her pants. Sometimes children are unstoppable.

btw, the easiest way to get out of this is for fil and mil to dress as black-and-white striped prisoners for halloween.  that way, if the kids do say, "grandpa was in jail!", you can say, "that was just a halloween costume, dear."

AND you kids will resent you for making them look like a liar at such a young age, so win win!
