Wedding Woes

Hi, please fix my baby.

He won't eat. Well, he eats in terms of drinking a bottle but he will not eat solids. He likes the spoon, he likes the bowl, he likes the food inside of the bowl but he has no interest of eating anything inside the bowl. I've changed the texture, the consistency, the time when I feed him, and I've tried as many things as I can. He will clamp his mouth shut and I can't get the spoon inside his mouth.

Tonight I gave him cut up pieces of banana, cooked carrots, and cooked peas. No interest in eating any of it.

I know part of it is teething but even when he isn't teething he has no interest in eating. I have no idea what to do next. I'm calling our pedi, but I swear I'm going to have a 2 yo who still drinks everything out of a bottle.

Re: Hi, please fix my baby.

  • how about something frozen in one of those mesh feeders? (mashed up frozen fruit or veggies)

The cold might be comforting on his gums, and the mesh feeder might be close enough to a pacifier/toy that he'd take it.
  • Has he always been anti food or is this new?  How long has this been going on?  I know you had problems with cereal, but thought that resolved.  If this is fairly new I'd give it some time.  Not only can teeth be an issue, but sometimes kids just aren't that hungry.
  • DD was definitely on a food strike when she first started teething.  If it extends beyond the point where his teeth are in, then I would probably back off for a while.  At his age, he doesn't really need solids, so maybe take a break and try reintroducing when he's a bit older.

"I swear I'm going to have a 2 yo who still drinks everything out of a bottle."

^^ This made me LOL.  Just this weekend, I was telling DH that in retrospect, I used to fret over stages with DD not knowing how incredibly short they would be.  There were a few weeks where she would only nap if I pushed her in her stroller, and I remember saying "We have to figure this out, or she'll never learn to sleep like a normal person!"  Yeah, that came and went pretty fast.  I'm guessing your situation will be similar.
  • If it were me, I'd still offer solids at mealtimes.  Maybe just back off on the amount you offer.  You know he's not interested mostly because of teething, but he should still learn that this is food too, and this is what he's going to be eating at some point.

I guess I'm trying to say keep solids in the routine so he stays familiar with them.  I know he's not taking in much right now and it's frustrating, but I'd still keep offering.

Withouth scaring you too much, Gig Kid is almost 11 months old and still won't take any solids because his parents gave up altogether when he refused them at 8 months (the first time they offered him solids).

  • How old is he?
Maybe he's just not ready f or that stage?
  • Have you given him biter biscuits or zwieback toast?  Maybe if he can have something tasty that's hard, it will keep him interested.  Or yogurt?  It's cold and tasty, but not chewable.  And Yobaby now makes yogurts w/veggie and fruit purees mixed in, so at least he's getting some nutrition.

And I agree with Taw.  Just put a few things on his tray and if they sit there or he plays, so be it.  Eventually he'll pick it up and chow down.
