Wedding Woes

Money from estranged dad?

My fiance's dad has never been a part of his life. He sees him maybe every other year, and that's just how it is. We'll invite him and his wife to the wedding and he may or may not show. But my fiance is pretty sure that his dad will offer him a sum of money (most likely out of guilt) as a wedding present.

Does he take it or not? Thoughts?

Re: Money from estranged dad?

  • Whether or not to take this imaginary money is really up to him.

  • I think it depends. If your FI feels okay with taking the money, then yes, I would do it, but if he feels resentful about it, then no, I wouldn't take it.

  • Totally your FI's call.  Your wedding isn't for quite some time.  Put this in the back of your mind and support whatever FI decides on this.

Take it as a blessing for you and FI. As long as FI is willing to take the money. I would use the money as a nest egg. Just let missing dad guilt be judged in the last day. Take your blessing, but  use it wisely.

I'm in kinda the same situation except my FI's dad will not be invited he's a hot mess with a long wrap sheet and history of taking advantage of my FI. So in my situation when we got oferred we said no. If we said yes that wouldl eave us open to all kinds of trouble. I'm already worried about him wedding crashing us. So see what kind of risk he poses or if he is someone you want involved. Money = Involvement .
