Wedding Woes

Older people need to learn about spoilers

Seriously.  They are just blurting out Downton Abbey spoilers all over FB.

"Lady Mary is a man!!"

"Bates impregnated a turtle!"

These ^^are not actual spoilers (or maybe they are, I haven't watched yet, so I don't know), because I am more considerate .  But why are you making these announcents, age 60+ FB friends?  Anyone interested in DA updates either already knows or they have it on their DVR ready to go and you just ruined it for them.  Have you just not watched an interesting TV show in so long that you don't know how this works?

Re: Older people need to learn about spoilers

  • some of the older people get on the facebook and go a little crazy. it's like they found a new toy and are just learning how to play with it.

  • I think they also might not know what a DVR is. If the show is over, you can talk about it, as it was pre-TiVo.

  • DG - I don't think people need to refrain from discussing just to protect my delicate sensibilities, but for Pete's sake, in this day and age you should no better than to announce a major plot point with no other purpose than to just make an announement.  Why not "Another great episode of DA!" or "I just love how how the Bates story is coming along" then you can elaborate in the comments where you discuss with other people who have seen it.  I have no problem with that.  But give a girl a small chance of avoiding major spoilers.

  • I'm not saying they shouldn't know better. I'm just saying they might not anyway.

Depending on how old they are, anyway. My mom is 61 and totally understands both DVRs and Facebook. MIL? Uses both but might not be wise enough to avoid posting spoilers.

Anyway, if it's really important to you, definitely watch the show as quickly as you can. I had to do that during lost, mostly because I *wanted* to be part of the discussions the next day instead of having to avoid them. If I waited 2 days to watch the show, everyone would be done talking about it.  :)
